Transcode AVCHD to DVCProHD

Hi all:

I don't use PCs for editing so I am quite naive about this. Can anyone tell me if they are using an AVCHD to DVCProHD workflow? Am I incorrect in thinking that PCs had/have a problem dealing with DVCProHD? I thought I have heard for years how PCs don't have codec support for DVCProHD? Or am I wrong about that or was it ever added/corrected?

Interested in the best workflow for the 150, shooting AVCHD and editing on an older PC with Premier CS3 or possiby upgrading to CS4. Is it possible? Would I want to transcode the AVCHD from the 150 to another codec that would be easier on the throughput requirements of this older PC (not an antique, but a year or year and half old). It seems as if there are several codec utilities for converting the footage, how do you know which one is the best combination of value and quality?

Sorry, but I use FCS2 for editing, you just log and capture AVCHD and FCP does everything else, it is a no-brainer. The PC way of having to have so many different choices about how to do something so seemingly simple seems to be overwhelming me.

Thanks for any help,

Dan

You can transcode to DVCPRO-HD which CS3 should edit with very little trouble.

I thought about upgrading to CS4 but I switched to Vegas Pro but while I had CS3 I transcoded to DVCPRO.
It was very easy to edit.

One of my older laptops I edited with was a 2.0 GHz 3 GB of ram Vista 32 bit system with no trouble.

I did not care much for the quality drop in going from AVCHD to DVCPRO however.

No problems here with DvcPro on a PC. I'm outputing a project as we speak of avchd and dvcpro combined footage using a program called Edius.

I use it all the time for avchd footage. You can throw it on the same time line as dvcpro or P2 footage (or anything) in any combination of frame rates and resolutions and start editing without transcoding. If you do want to transcode the footage Edius also has a free program that will convert it to AVI's in about real time, the quality is really good. You mentioned CS3 or 4 and I know you also shoot on an hpx P2 camera and I would recommend Edius over CS3 anyday. No raylight needed just throw it on the timeline and start editing, output to dvcpro or any format you want. It's simple.

I think Edius has a free 30 day trial, it is a very easy program to use.
