FEATURE: TRAILER - SUPERSEEDS | Super Powered Adventure

Thanks Kegan.

Additional small blurb here about the style:

It may be weird to read this, but this is exactly what I wanted for this feature. Like, if I had the ability to scan my brain and hand over an image to someone, this is what they would've created. The flames are actual flame composites, but the overall style and way they're composited isn't photorealistic. When I described what I was looking for, there were a few very key points:

1. Flames should somewhat mold to fingers, hand, wrist.
2. Particles should be present to fill out the world. Even dripping flame.
3. Not looking for photorealistic. It needs to fit with the content.

It needed to look great, but in the way that Scott Pilgrims VFX looked great for that movie and what it was. I'm trying to create something that feels like it's own universe, and this is a huge factor in bringing it to life in a different fashion. I know (at least right now) that people can't shoot fire from their hands. I'm sure most of the audience knows this, too. Comic books aren't generally drawn photorealistic, which actually means you need to invest in the people experiencing that world, then you believe what you see in some weird way.

Not sure if that makes sense, but applying that to what I'm doing, I arrived at this style. Later, when the trailer is released, and you see the poppy, colorful costumes, locations and what's going on, it should make complete sense.

Basically, I wanted to keep it in line with the world from the get-go when thinking about everything, and that actually probably will help on the VFX side.

I'm loving the footage you've been posting to vimeo. Everything looks.... "Feature-like". Can't wait for this. Loved Scott Pilgrim btw.

By the way, I think you're right about this... after the long break from DVXuser, coming back and reading technical forums is really REALLY hard. There's an influx of people who talk more than ask questions and spread a lot of FUD about gear, process, etc. I love gear,it's what helped me get where I am, I'm open to a lot of options, well everything but SD haha... and I love learning about the process and what REALLY happens...

But... I'm bad at mediating my own posts and I'm getting exhausted with the members posting in technical forums. The only peaceful places seem to be the ones that get little traffic...

Think I'm gonna have to leave user altogether.

I still talk to a lot of people I met here, but overall I've come to view User as a non-constructive resource. So I spend a lot less time here than I used to. For some of the same reasons.

And, IMO, the flipside to all of the danger of going SAG is that most DECENT actors are SAG, in Los Angeles. They probably will not work on your no-budget projects and sacrifice their time on something they will get fined for. Non Union actors are typically not very strong, or, they're being forced to join the union as you cast them. Haha. And I do mean FORCED...

There are other avenues, as well, to dealing with it if it comes to not selling outright. All's well, and I don't regret going SAG because without it I wouldn't have gotten strong enough and dedicated enough actors I don't think.

Next time I may avoid it.

We decided against going SAG, mainly because they were not capable of understanding a lot of what we were envisioning for the project. In the end, it was the right choice for us, as events are now proving. Because we need a lot of flexibility with our project. I had a phone call with a distributor yesterday as well, where some of the same thoughts came up; whoever takes on VOD/DVD/etc will have to be on board with my plan. For us, things are definitely playing out in an interesting way. And I am learning there is more than one way to skin a cat when selling a film.

And you are right about actors, overall. There are many good Fi-Core actors - mainly in smaller cities, but in the big markets, it's in a god actor's interest to go union. How we got around it was that I cast LOST CHILDREN with actors I've been working with for the past 5 years. I know they are good, and I know they trust me as a director. It just removed that one extra road-block from getting things done. I knew the acting would be good, so I could focus on getting the performances.

Barry said they're working on cleaning it up, will take a little time but I definitely trust them. I kind of feel I need a forum that's as good as the User Films section here. Was suggested that I check out Film Specific, and I might just do that but hopefully I can live at home! Aka... user.

There's nothing wrong with cultivating actors, either. Keep working with the same group, expanding at the same time, and building their skill. That's what we do behind the camera, then why not the same for actors? SAG and unions are definitely a great thing when they're working FOR the Actor, not against them. At a Sub 500K level, though, I think it's just way too difficult and the back end of it all is really murderous.

If the ULB Agreement opened up a tad bit more, it'd be SAG all day. Well, and the paper-process wasn't so old school... our Rep is great, though.

Just more choices to think about, but pretty sure the next one won't be SAG.

These days the forums I read here about 99% of the time are User Films, Acting, Directing, and Screenwriting. I enjoy all of them, but especially this one, particularly for the more epic threads - like Corrado, Deuce Of Spades, Stricken...

Thankfully, my kit has been fairly stable for some time, so I haven't had much need to go into the gear forums. That means I've missed what evidently has become something of a zoo over there, at least at times. Lucky for me I guess, but otherwise too bad - it didn't used to be that way...

This is natural I suppose. Alumni often find college kids annoying after graduation. It's all quite necessary.

Y'got me there! That's pretty true, haha. I sometimes forget how rowdy I was (and can still be) when it comes to gear talk. So, I digress.

Best free filmschool on the planet, me thinks.

For sure, man. Here's some stuff I just pulled and an old still that I think got by-passed. Will throw them all on the first post as well.

A VFX "test" here again. Some stuff that will be added to the final, but it almost looks final indeed .Love how the particles swirl on the ground like they're caught in the heat of battle.

Love it. Your film looks pretty expensive so far. I hope you sell it for millions. :)

I love this genre. Have you seen "The Specials"?
