Trailer from feature-film shot HDV.

Wow, great music and visuals. I particularly loved the ending with the tent in the forest. Anything special there? Was that just normal sun going through the mist with a filter on the camera? Seems unlikely, but I can' t imagine how much light you had to throw on that scene otherwise....

Great DP.

Anthony: I'll shoot you an email and we'll talk.

Jerry: I think that we had one small light for that shot and the rest was just Mattebox filters on the camera and the joy of nature. :)

After spending most of my time in the HVX threads, I decided to spin myself over here and i stumble across some actual Z1 footage, some good Z1 footage at that...it appeared to handle quite well in the low light, the forest shot was stunning. And come on! You've got Lori Petty! Keep us updated on the FCP post developments, I'd like to know how it holds up under the grading and fine tuning.

Hey Nice work. Nice light & camera work.

I think everyone should have to post a reel to be ableto comment on others' work. I just finished my first feature and every wedding, party, corprate guy I know had something to say. Arm Chair Quarterbacks ....

Just a thought.

Really Nice work !

Not to rain on your parade or side track this thread, but alot of those guys in the end will be your paying customers, treat them well and they'll make you happy and wealthy when you hit the big time.

This looks really cool. I like to think I have a discerning eye, but if you didn't tell me this was 60i footage, I wouldn't have noticed. I'm guessing the compression made it look more filmic to me.

I'm about to use the FX1 for a short film and I want to do the pulldown to 24p from that footage. What's the best way to go about that if you're not doing a tape to tape transfer? Has anyone seen pulldown altered footage from one of these sony cams? Also, if you're shooting 60i, how do you get 24p? My math sucks, but I thought when you separate the fields you'd get 30p from 60i, no?

Would really like to know how you got Lori Petty and all these other highly recognizable actors in this! What was your budget and where are you looking to take the final film? Direct to video? Theatrical release?

The way that we got 95% of the actors was to hold auditions and ask some of our favorites to come in. We used Casting Connection (www.castingconnection.com) to get a majority
of our actors which is free and we got a lot of amazing people that way (ie: Peter Quartaroli, David Fine, Kristie Cox, etc).

I just sent email and scripts to a number of people, and the actors loved the script so they
really wanted to do it regardless of what they got paid. They just wanted to do it because
it was something they believed it. So, I was really lucky that the story and script turned
out well.

Essentially, I found that there was a real love and appreciation for independent film in
the actor community, especially if it is a strong story that they believe in.

I was impossible to get to a number of actors (ie: Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, etc) because their
agents wouldn't pass along the script unless they got their normal fees of millions of dollars. But, we got really lucky to get the script in the hands of Lori and she loved it.
We were amazingly lucky to have her in the film and I can't tell you how honored I am to have worked with her.

We will be finishing the film in early-Fall and then take it to through the film festival circuit
and hope that we get distribution (or a sales agent). The goal is theatrical distribution.

Let me know if you have any questions at all.

Thanks for all of the support everyone!

Looks nice, that last shot is fantastic. I really would like to see it after you ‘finish’ it and work the colors and so on and so fourth. But what was up with the vinvetting (sorry about the spelling) in the graveyard shot.

Unbelievable. Awesome stuff.

Unbelievable. Awesome stuff.

Can you tell me what your budget was for this film? What did you put into this for lighting situations?

hey, thraveboy, I assume you did some tests with the Z1´s 60i to 24p conversion before start shooting HDV. if you did, what was the result?

Wow, absolutely awesome my friend!

Though I have a rough question,

Can the FX1 pull something like that off? I'm 17 and I just purchased the FX1 for my birthday last August and looking at your footage makes me wonder if my cam can do that too (with the right lighting, accessories, etc) or was their a special Z1 feature used (CF25, 1/50th etc) that I can't do on my cam?

Again, that was great! I commend you. :)

I'm not familiar enough with either of the sony cameras to say for sure, but I believe the difference between the FX1 and Z1u is in the frame rates. Everything else about the footage is basically the same so aside from the frame rates alone, you should be able to achieve the same look. It's in the lighthing. Look into a film lens adapter like the M2 or Cinemek G35 or Letus 35 and you'll really be shooting some great stuff. If you haven't seen it already, go to http://www.cinemek.com/?demos&id=5 and look at the stuff Macgregor shot using their adapter with his FX1e (european model).

I was at an HD film festival a few weeks back and cinematographer Jody Eldred was there showing off a 2k projection of footage he shot which was used for an episode of JAG. He said if you're going to attempt the pulldown to get 24p temporal movement, you want to shoot 50i not 60i. Don't know if the FX1 can shoot 50i so look into that.

If you shot straight 60i then, how do you plan to give it that film 24P look? Because I'v heard that when you convert 60i to 24P it creates artifacts and serious motion blur.
