Trailer from feature-film shot HDV.

Looks link a great flick. Too bad it looks too much like video instead of film.:lipsrseal
Nice colors though and the composition looks really great.
The only shot that bugged me a bit was the opening boom up through the flowers to reveal the couple on the beach. They are still hidden behind the flowers. I kept waiting for the camera to boom up a bit more....
My favorite shot is the last boom over the tents. The lighting and colors in the woods looks supurb!
And on top of that - TANK GIRL!! sweet...

Yeah, this is the raw unprocessed footage. So, once we do the 24p, color correction, and tape-to-tape transfer steps it will look a lot more like "film". :) We'll do that once we finish post-production. :)

I like it. I'm shooting my first feature in Sept. Can you tell me your workflow? What are you editing on? Native HD or with a DI codec? How are you doing the 24p? Is tape to tape HDV to DVcam?

Thanks for your help. I'll pass on the info when I get to your stage!!!

We'll be editing in native HDV in FCP. We're getting the new version of FCP this week that supports the Sony HDV natively. We're keeping it in the native 60i format all the way through the editing process and then we'll do the conversion to 24p, color correction, and tape-to-tape conversion at the end.

Zig, hopefully everyone else will see those SF actors even more soon, they are amazingly talented and a dream to work with. :)

Brilliant

Brilliant

Brilliant Job.

Well done thraveboy and to all your team too...

the last shot of the trailer(tent in the wood) is a dream to my eyes...

I'm glad to finally see some people doing movies with the FX1/Z1 instead of wasting time discussing missing features...

Looks very well done. When I saw the actress from Point Break & A League of Their Own I had to make sure I wasn't seeing things. That's really cool that you have her in your film.

Dremmwel: I completely agree. For me the most important thing is to get films done with whatever is available at the time. I just made the choice of shooting using the FX1/Z1
to get the resolution increase over the DVX, and just do the best lighting and cinematography possible. (Or at work with a genius of a DP). ;)

Skital: Yes, we were extremely lucky to have Lori Petty. She is an amazing actor and her
performances were mind-blowing. I can't wait for people to see how great she is in the
film!

Very Impressive!

Very Impressive!

This is the first time I see something shot with this camera and now I can see that it is very worth shooting with it. I'd love to see the full feature. Good Luck!

Congratulations Thraveboy!I´m amazed by the trailer! And i´m even more happy, like dremmwel said, to see people working with HDV, and in so good manners! It really shows that HD is the way to go!

I think it will look perfect after 24p conversion! In fact, congrats to all the team!

Thanks for the info on your workflow. This is very confusing 60i vs 50i, 1080i vs. 720p etc. One more question if you don't mind... how are you going to convert to 24p after editing the project in 60i? Is it possible to edit native HDV 24p from the Z1U in FCP5? I'm considering editing either in PPro 1.5 or FCP5, so this is important for me. Also, what monitor did you use while filming? I get mixed views on which monitor is best.

Thanks in advance.

Jkim: I think that the 60i to 24p conversion is a fairly standard workflow. Don't know for sure if you can edit in "native" HDV 24p in FCP5 because that would mean that you have to
convert to 24p and it would no longer be "native". We're justing going to leave it in the
"native" 60i format that we shot with throughout the pipeline and probably won't convert
it to 24p until the final tape-to-tape transfer and master are made.

We just used a standard SD monitor. This just means that you have to use the expanded
focus and the viewfinder to make sure that you have the focus sharp before each shot.
This also meant that it wasn't practical to follow focus, but as a director I didn't find that
that limited the shot choices except in 1 or 2 shot cases for the entire feature. :)

HdnsmeD25: Yeah, Mackenzie Firgens is also an amazing actor. In the next feature that
I am writing, she is going to be one of the two leads. :) I loved working with her.

The trailer looks great!!!

DP did a awesome job. What work arounds did you use to get HDV into FCP as it has only become native in FCP5...also did you run into any issues with HDV in the post enviroment. Also please let me know wheather you are bumping the HDV master up to HDcam for Color Correction...etc. As I will be following a similar path for post and want to make sure all is good.

Was the grad on the exterior tent shot in camera or in post?

Thanx

The trailer was done just in iMovieHD and there was absolutely no post-processing on the footage at all. Everything was done on the camera with mattebox filters. We entirely used the default settings on the camera and only altered zoom, aperture, and focus.

We are only beginning true post-production this week with the new version of FCP5.

This looks really solid. Extremley professional. I have always liked Lori Petty ever since Booker! (Yeah I watched Booker and 21 Jump Street; so what.) She is a talent; good for you.

Now, the Trailer.

I'd like to see a trailer that isn't so ambiguous. For me, I have literally no idea what this about nor what to expect. Sure; there are guns, sure there is pain, sure there is some human drama going on but still.... A little tell would be nicer.

It looks wonderfully done however. I look forward to seeing this.

Your gonna take a hit on that REZ though when you convert to 24p right?

Please post some examples of the 24p conversion when it's done? I'm really curious to see if it takes that 60i edge off.

Hi thraveboy, I'd like to have a chat with you about a project that I'm putting in place. It will be shot with sony HDV for hoppefully festival 2006... it's a short and also my directorial debut. I'm now finalising the story and in convesation with different script writer to get the best out of the story. I'm asking you simply because the mood and atmosphere of your trailer is exactly what I would love to achieve, Preprod will start this summer and I want to get my numbers right in terms of finance and shedule. So I wouldn't mind your input on some of the questions I have.... If you don't mind please email me.. anthony@anthonybert.com

Thank you

Anthony

I agree with john. There needs to be narration...

It looks like there's a bunch of people in love and this guy goes around and kills them.

That's what I would guess this is about.

That last shot was beautiful... the gradient made it look extra cool.

Keep up the good work and best of luck to you!
