Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

Very, very good. I liked the music, and I don't think it was too long, though that's personal opinion. I liked the water shots especially, thought they looked good in it. Acting looked great, and I liked the direction. Also, the editing was very nice. Good job.

thank you for the kind words. i'll pass this and the others on to my girlfriend, as this was her first attempt at cutting a trailer.

wowow cygnet

the look was impressive! i dont know how much you are willing to/or alllowed to divulge - but would you be willing to share some of the things that you guys did to make it look so nice?

(lighting, color correction, times of day shot...etc)

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

lighting - chinese lanterns on a boompole, kinoflo's, and thats it.
color correction - Digital Film Lab by Digital Film Tools
day exteriors were all shot during sunset.

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

thanks man

chinese lanterns are the way to go! you used the paper ones no? any problems with them catching flames or anything?

how long did each lighting setup take on average?

peace

yes, paper. $10 each at Cost Plus. used tungsten balanced 150w bulbs in them. nothing caught fire. we wanted to move fast so the house was largely pre-lit the night before, and we moved the lantern(s) to whatever part of the room we were working in. bringing the kino-flo's in when necessary slowed us down sometimes, but we probably averaged about 1 set-up per hour and 15 set-ups per day. but rememeber, each set-up was usually an entire scene for us because we were shooting with three cameras. probably averaged 5 to 7 takes.

at what point exactly? what sort of thing was missing? or rather, what would you have liked to see that would make you go see it?[/quote]

I'm sorry that this is disjointed. I tried to write possibly helpful comments and although they may seemingly amount to nothing or harsh or brash or shallow thinking, I did spend quite a while thinking about this and then writing this ( close to an hour)  It (this post )may lack the polish and niceties, I was trying to be straightforward and quick.

I wouldn't go see it because I had a difficult time figuring out what the basic story was from the trailer. That one-line concept,( what is this called?)  was buried somewhere.

It takes 1:27 m to show that a party is happening and that people are waiting for Dan. This should be achievable much, much quicker. In that time however, it was pretty clear..party going to start, Dan who is like the guest of honor pretty much, is not here. You don't need the phone number on the refrig to show that. You don't need the scrubbing shot to show that, etc.

I found it confusing with "Richard" that the first time you see him it seems he is talking to someone at the party and then later he shows up at the door.

Having the "doug" to "dan" mix up was probably not necessary. If you want to build up on the drama, lets see a bit of how things get ugly.  The argument scene was a bit intriguing, but I was so lost about the basic story, that ended up being very random to me.

I suggest maybe some narration or graphic to show that ( or the story concept)  a bit more cleary, because with the way it is, I have too many question marks.

The most dramatic video was pretty far back ( the argument scene ) and it would be questionable if viewers would wait that long to get to that.. By the time I get to the last shot, I'm not sure if this is the same day or night or next week.

In any case, a trailer should not make you wonder this much. Whatever idea you throwout there has to be simple and clear.  Nail it and  think about the story more, less about  the acclaim and cool shots to include and what actors to keep in, etc.

good luck, as all have said you've done a nice job in production.

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

thanks for the info cygnet - its inspring to know that you got such great results using those cheap lanterns! i gotta get my own set

cant wait to see the film, whens the dvd gonna be out?

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

pooh,

thanks for taking the time to respond to my query. i didn't cut the trailer so your criticisms are not taken personally. although, my girlfriend did do the cutting, so i can tell you the thought process that went into the creative decisions. keep in mind, this is her first pass at a trailer so there is nothing to defend about the first version. it will be revised.

so, for you the story of the film was vague. beyond showing that everyone is waiting for Dan, what we tried to convey was a story about a woman blinded by a desire for the man she wants. she becomes "lost" in the chaos of her own party, and another man that may very well be what she needs emerges.

from there, we move into critical acclaim we've received and i think they're necessary because we are seeking distribution and festival acceptance and you can't get either without creating your own buzz.

(again, thank you for your time. more later...)

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

We interrupt this thread to bring you a special message!

so YOU are the guy who makes trailers. i HATE you. HATE. seething, unadulterated, pure HATE.

why?

because you ruin every movie. every single one. i don't know if its you or the lackluster morons in the marketing depts of the studios, but someone has to fix this rampant disease on the film industry.

they say 90% of all movies lose $$. i know why. bad marketing. ......bad trailers.

DO NOT SHOW ME THE WHOLE MOVIE in the trailor. DO NOT MAKE IT A HIGHLIGHT REEL of the good parts of the flick. DO NOT EXPOSE THE PLOT TWISTS. and do not make it more than 30 seconds. ever. not for any reason. not even if the Almighty himself asks you to.

2 recent examples of films ruined by the trailer: i, robot and the life aquatic.

i, robot: will smith, robot...some stuff about bieng the first robot to kill a human. "i did not murder him!" hooked.

but wait, theres more...robots go crazy, wide shots of mass destruction, and BOOM. there goes the whole thing. i dont need to shell out $10 hard earned bucks to see it, I JUST DID in the trailer! theres no plot twist left to surprise me. kills the whole experience.

life aquatic: boat, bill murray, wannabe jaques custeau, film makers. stop, great, i wanna see it.

but wait....we keep going.....father and son problems....revenge...killing a shark......and again, wham, there goes my enthusiasm for seeing it. because i just did.

this drives me nuts. a film trailer should tell me why i should go see a movie, NOT SHOW ME THE MOVIE!

harken back to yesteryear...a little movie called superman. whole trailer...some clouds in a bright blue sky.....and the logo of the movie. blockbuster returns. no shots of the movie = mucho mula.
maybe you recall and little franchise called the matrix? what is the matrix? ....whole trailer...whole ad campaign. no shots. nothing but a tag line. again , blockbuster returns.

why do i want to see superman? because its superman! why do i want to see teh matrix...to learn...what is the matrix.

studios shoot themselves in the foot everytime they market this way. comedies are the worst. all the funny parts were in teh trailer, the rest is just filler. action films get it to, and thrillers. its got to stop. since you are in a place to do something about it, i beg of you, stop the madness. ive stopped forking over my $10 bucks for movie i already saw as trailers.

-these remarks brought to you by an angry cinephile and marketing expert.

we return you to your reguarly scheduled posts.

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

IsraelHoudini I agree totally! When I showed my own trailer around all the different forums a lot of the feedback I got was that people didn't know what the story was! My co-director won an argument that he shouldn't too. I wanted to put LESS footage into the teaser. Much less. But he wanted it CRAMMED full of footage! He won the argument rhrough sheer determination however.

I think there are a lot of people out there who for some reason want to know the entire film before they see it.

here's how it typically works. we cut a trailer. show it to the client (studio). they ask for changes based on what they want to see or don't want to see. we make those changes. client sees revision, more comments. the trailer is tested before joe six-pack. if joe likes it, our trailer goes to finish. if joe hates it, our competitor's trailer goes to finish. either way, we still get paid an obscene amount of money.

I Robot and The Life Aquatic were not cut by me our the company I work for. we did The Lord of The Rings trilogy, Kill Bill, Adaptation, the Harry Potter films, all M. Night's films since Sixth Sense, etc. do you think those were bad trailers too?

As for Superman you're describing the teaser, not the trailer or tv spots that followed. The Matrix was advertised just as heavily as any keanu action flick, but with a clever hook. to claim that no images from the movie were shown is absurd.

market research has shown that more people will go see a film the better they understand the story beforehand. the less they understand, the less likely they are to go. that's why a very mysterious teaser for a film like Superman, or more recently Unbreakable will be followed by a more in-depth trailer months later -- in order to sell tickets. the ":30 solution" you are describing would not get the average joe to see the film. they'd have too many questions and start seeking out details of the story in other ways. btw, most films make a profit, i don't know where you're getting your information. the american film industry brought in 60 billion dollars in revenue last year.

Re: Trailer for feature shot on DVX100

I saw the previous version of the trailer that you guys posted a while back. This new one is head & shoulders above the previous version.
I SO want to see this film.

Any chance of a showing in chicago if not, when can we buy the dvd?

Congrats & best of luck
