Trailer DVX100A + Andromeda

andromeda or not - i liked it. that was put together really well. however i'm confused about the "noise" and "grain" comments. i only saw one spot where there was to me noticeable grain and that was probably due to lowlight - i guess, but all the other scenes looked fine to me.

that was very nice.

If i recall correctly from one of his older posts, Matthew said he does a lot of sharpening in post, so that might be where the grain/noise everyone is talking about is coming from. Personally I like the look. Gives it a super16 kinda feel. Not sure how that grain would look on a movie screen, but since that isn't likely to be the way its shown, I think it works quite well.

As for the sequence of events--perhaps we should be teased about 1) someone moving in next door 2) they're bomb makers 3) let's put a hole in the wall 4) but I'm just a typography designer 5) bomb going off in CN Tower 6) "I love you."

That's helpful, thanks. Ideally I'd like to have a fairly straight forward, American style 'story' trailer where you pretty much know the lay of the land before you trot off to the movie theatre or rent the dvd...

Yeah, mojo, I do a lot of sharpening in post, hence the grain. It is very possible to get noiseless images with the andromeda. It still is only a hot-rod version of SD so you always have to give and take in some way....

Any other comments or theories about movie trailer style would be appreciated, I'm always after new ideas and methods to learn!

I posted the trailer on cinematography.com and David Mullen ASC (he shot Akeeleh and the Bee, Shadow Boxer, among others..) said that he was impressed by the quality... very nice to hear any comment from someone of that stature... he also said it was probably a bad idea for the film to be set largely in a white room ... (always learning, like I said..)

ah you don't watch HGTV :)
on a technical aspect white walls especailly a well lit room might glare and for braodcast purposes is a no-no, but you can fix that in an NLE. however for the viewer, even in real world conversation, (admit it even when someone's talking to you - you may have eye contact for awhile, but you'll look arounfd after a few seconds) so eyes wander. white is flat and offers no movement or mood.

again good stuff

Hey Matthew,
Looks awesome the shot of the redhead that repeats reminds me of the OC in a good way from a cinematic POV, not storyline based. I think the trailer looks awesome, have you seen HVX footage in the flesh, how do you think that it compares to Andromeda footage also with the new version of Scultor what is the native output you can get from the mod and at what colour sampling. One last question have you done much keying seen some of the earlier tests you did and for some reason thought you could get better keys from the mod this is not just you but from other users aswell, however this could of been from earlier versions of sculptor.
Thanks for your time and your work which I always am keen to check out.

Everything I've seen from Matt has been top notch. This is no exception. The look of this flik is great. Would really like to hear about your experience with the andromeda. Did being tied with wires affect your choices? How did it limit you? Would love for you to post a picture of your setup. I for one like the grain the post sharpening created. Feels like an intentional filmic choice.

As for the story telling of the trailer, I think it would help if the plot elements were more linear. Right now the plot points jump around a bit much. In that way (only), it reminds me of the trailer from Domino. Similar execution. Not a bad thing per se, just unsettling. Makes you work to follow it.

The shot where the girlfriend says "I love you" stood out as a green screen to me. Nicely done green screen of course, but the lighting and perspective seems off based on the location the characters are supposed to be in. This could stand out in the film depending on how long the scene is. Other than that, the rest looked great. Your shot choices were gorgeous.

I have tons of questions (hope you don't mind answering):
Is this a feature or a short? What was your budget? How do we see the final flik? The h.264 compression was really great. Could you post your compression settings?

Thanks!

Overall, this is probably ONE OF the best trailers i've seen on here so far - as far as cinematography is concerned. Very nice sound aswell. There are a few lighting problems I see but the trailer itself still grabbed my attention and that's all that matters.

i also dont understand the grainyness comments. Looks more like film than anything i've ever seen on this site. Great job.

Superb images! That stairwell shot is fantastic. This is the best sample of Andromeda-based footage I have seen.

what is the font you used on the end credit screen?

lovely trailer.

i think some of the dialogue seems unneccesarily repetitive. as in "i design typfaces and fonts," and "i design typefaces and fonts!" and "that looks like a fertilizer bomb," and "it looks like a bomb." i know you plan to change a good deal of the audio, so perhaps this is part of that.

i also feel uneasy about the instances of images from the same setups that start close then move out (lead w/ ear against wall, lead at computer typing). feel like that's a waste of time in the trailer world. but perhaps you've only shot the trailer and not any of the film itself?

and i agree with the above comment about the composited background in the "i love you" shot. not a perfect match there.

please keep us updated. this looks like a great project and i'd loved to see the finished product.

nice work bro....

when is somebody gonna "andromeda-ize" the HVX?!!

btw, is this a feature or short? (sorry I havent read the entire thread)

Helvetica, bolded..

It's a feature. The budget was 10K, a grant I received from the Arts Council here in Canada (I spent 80 percent of course on the Andromeda and all the hardware needed to run it..) It's two hours fifteen minutes right now.. (kinda long actually). My h.264 settings are: Apple compressor, fixed bitrate at 2500 Kbps, compressed from a very sharpened, lossless 848x352 comp at 100% AAC audio...

I think it would help if the plot elements were more linear.

You're right, I'm moving in that direction now..

Thanks, also a very good point - time is the most precious substance in the trailer world!! I will be more efficient in my next pass.

What did you use for sound?

An Audio Technica AT815b shotgun, not an incredible mic but very decent IMHO if used with good technique (ie: right on top of the actor's mouths, all the time)

The key shot is not a perfect match

I'm working on a much better one..using AE 7 and it's wonderful lens blur feature which allows me to do some nice bokeh effects.... I normally hate keys because you could spend your whole life trying to get them right, but I resorted to it for this one shot and thought to myself, well, if I can't get it perfect then I might as well just try to make a bold, interesting shot.. so that the direction I'm working in.. not there yet but soon I hope..

Thanks again for all comments, they are all VERY helpful to me in my quest to create a professional looking and sounding trailer...

Hi Matt.
AWESOME video quality!
What exact settings do you use and what equipment did you use?
Thanks.

Here's a draft version of a trailer for a film I'm working on using the Andromeda modification for the DVX100A.
I say draft because I haven't recorded all the voices I need to properly tell the story in trailer version....plus the 480p image is up-rezzed from an SD source, not the ideal method for full sharpness and color.
That said, here it is. The story regards a young typography designer who finds himself neighbor to a couple of bomb-building French mercenaries during a hot summer.
