GH2 Tradeoff

So I bought a GH2.

I've done very short tests with the stock settings, 44mb hack, 66mb hack and Seaquake hack. Need to get a better card so I can actually test the Seaquake for more than a few seconds.

Biggest things that stand out to me seems to be increased level of clarity over my T3i. The other big one, is the lack of severe aliasing and moire. I can point the camera handheld at trees in winter with the entire frame full of branches and all that aliasing and color moire I'm used to is gone.

Most noticeable tradeoff still seems to be 8bit banding in low light, but I'm ok making this compromise. If anything, I can go in and do some noise reduction in 16bit or something to try and mitigate shots that suffer from it. Otherwise, this camera has impressed thus far.

I used a 50mb/s patch on my GH1.

I've been using this 88mb/s (Sage's) on my GH2 and for me it's too good to use another. I personally don't have the necessity for 176Mb/s (nor do I want to buy several 32GB cards to have acceptable recording times) and with 16GB cards you can get plenty of recording time.

I got two 16GB cards, since you live in the US, I'd say get a couple of 32GB cards or four 16GB cards (preferrably Sandisk).

Welcome to the club, Ryan!

The lack of moire & aliasing, plus the nice detail and resolution, are what drove me to get the GH2 over any of the current crop of Canon DSLRs. Now that the hack is out and working well, I don't think anything else comes close unless you spend at least $10K on a camera.

'Tis a good time to be an indie filmmaker!

I have been using the latest Quantum hack, it seems to be stable. I seems to have the best of both world a 166 mbit H mode and a 66 mbit L mode. So you can choose what works best for what you are filming. If I have to do a short narative I would go to the highest possible and for anything needing loger shot the lower bitrate.

Wow, so some hacks let you switch between bit rates with that H and L modes? Very interesting...that is really helpful. Thanks.
