Torn between gh2 and 5d

Phillip doesn't know much about the GH2 or Hack.

People are allowed to form their own opinions, it's just better to hear it from people who've actually tried/done it, s'all. I've got both cameras, I know first hand that the 5D only has Sensor Size over the GH2, maybe a slight edge in DR. The rest? Nah.

But anyway, whatever floats it.

The sensor pays a key in lowlight. I know you backup that GH2 like its your life but whether its even by a little bit...The MKII would be the choice in lowlight.

Mmmn, nah. Wrong again. I back up good images like it's my life, because that's what I put my life into. A lot of vets come to me to ask about camera gear, they trust my opinion. If the 5D was good, I'd say that it was. You ask me which camera has the better image between Scarlet and GH2? I'm gonna tell you scarlet. C300 vs GH2? C300. So on and so forth. I don't ever have to shoot GH2, I can shoot Epic on a whim.

The Sensor's being muted by its own inability to compress a video image properly. Everything it is becomes null and void. Go and do the test yourself, let us know what you come back with.

=] It's not that hard.

Thats what she said.lol Jus playin

Well I hope one day we can see the GH2 used in television like The Carson Daly show, House, Hawaii five O, SNL and some movies like Art of Valor like the 5DMII has.

Main problem with GH2 for me is sharpness and colors, I have to do a lot of adjusting to get it the way I want. With a 5d I love the neutral colors and slightly soft image for shooting peoples faces, skin tone, body, etc. Now for building work, locations, etc. then a Sharper image from the Panasonic can be better, but I just have a love for the Canon image.

Also just recently I got to work with an Fs100 and Sony F3 and I actually like the way the footage from that camera A LOT.

You can always take a super clean image and STOMP it in the grade, try and get a muddy, aliased or moire patterned image to look clean. GH2 all day long. Besides, if people are hiring you just because of your camera and not your reel? Well, then you'd better invest in a better camera than BOTH of these because EVERYONE has access to these now. Just my 2 cents-Adam

Of course you will. If not 3's. People act like they were being used from inception on these jobs: it took over a year and a half for it to reach that point if I remember right.

Act of Valor still looks bad for the most part; it being shot on DLSRs doesn't change that.

Indeed. Not having both is kinda crazy, anyway.

12 Months to be exact as said by Shane Hurlbut.
You crack me up Kholi, So I am almost positive if the exact footage was shot on the GH2's you would say that it looks Great, Beautiful, Terrific and so on..right?

Of course... didn't you already say it produced better footage as well?

Kholi,
I think the GH2 is a superior camera with its hack...very true. But I am talking from a business point of view, we're talking about when you get hired by a production company that needs to get something really quick in another city or state or if they don't have their RED or any of their $20,000 + cameras. I have been hired by many and you know that I had my hacked GH1 and loved it but I don't get the business from big production companies that come out here looking to find a videographer and they always ask "what do you shoot with?" they advertise "in Vegas for a shoot , need someone with a RED or even a 5D" we get that a lot. We even did The Ron Artest sizzle reel from a big production company and they specifically asked for the 5D.

So, logically... and I'm only applying logic, if you said it's superior with the hack... then all things created equal... it will produce a better image.

I guess I just might be confused, though. Oh well.

You are correct. But our little argument was for business purposes, remember? haha...anyways...nice chatting with you as always.
On another note, I am seriously thinking of getting that FS100, what is your take on it? also what is a seriously great camcorder under $5000...bang for the buck? I need to ditch my wifes HMC40 and pick something else for our camcorder. I hate the lowlight on it.

I understand the business thing: I owned every iteration of the HVX (HPX) because of the business thing. And that camera's image was not as nice as the XH-A1, or the EX-1, both of which I wanted badly. However, I also knew that going to either would mean losing a lot of money.

Back in the day (ha!) I was renting my HVX200A +Letus Ultimate kit for 1750/day, man. THat's without a tripod or mattebox, filters, etc.

Trust, I know about business. The difference here is that there are a ton of options in the same range, or less. And the HVX used digital media, which was popular. A1 was still on tape, phasing out. GH2 and 5D both use similar media, both have large sensors--5D's being ginormous, both can do what most people want. S'just not that big of a gap anymore hardware wise, but image wise? Well, like I said... side by side em yourself.

FS100, nnnnaaahhh no thanks. I think it's priced well but just not well enough to want it. I've played with it, shot some footage. I like the weird form factor, it's pretty keen in lowlight, but I am not a fan of Sony images at all. Always look super thin. S'just me.

Yea, wife is still bugging me about an EX1 since she is our best shooter. So I might as well look for an EX1r. Would love the EX3 but can no afford. haha
Thanks bro

We just finished a shoot with two GH2s, an HVX200, and a 5d. And the client kept pointing out the 5d image, how great it looks, that color, etc... so, if you're not pixel peeping, that sensor still offers a lot. Here, I prefer the GH2 overall, but I'm a pixel peeper big-time.

Trying to keep actors in focus with razor sharp DOF can be really frustrating.

The only real gripe I have with the GH2 is it is thumb cripplingly small (which is good in some ways, not so good in others). The Canons I think have better ergonomics. Other than that, I find that the amount? level? of dof with the GH2's sensor is similar to 35mm film.
