Torn between gh2 and 5d

Nikon glass ( especially manual AI-S glass ) adapts to almost anything, where Canon EOS glass is far more limited when working with non-Canon cameras. From my perspective it`s the Canon EOS glass that "locks" you in.

One of the reasons I don't own any. Cameras come and go, good glass is forever.

I really need to check out a hacked GH2, might save me having to upgrade to a 5grand camera for now :-)

hacked gh2 is a really great tool! It's great as a B camera, or car-mount crash cam. Great image, and smaller body size compared to 5D, is a benefit for rigging.

Driftwood Quantum or Seaquake seem to be the most popular for sure although Sage has a Quantum variation for slo mo that seems pretty solid as well.

Here's a tiny vid done with the gh2 w/ the quantum patch. I used to have a 5d & 7d, but really, even forgetting the positives of a gh2, no moire, sharper, cleaner, grades better, hack increasing the bit-rate and detail of the footage etc... I actually enjoy just the aesthetic of gh2 footage footage more than the 5d. I think the reason is because of motion, I can't put my finger on it but at least in 24p, the motion of the gh2 is very filmic and appears more natural imo. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll enjoy either camera!

Are you using this for a hobby or business?
Business? get the 5D Mark II. 9 out of 10 times they ask or even look at your resume for a 5D Mark II...that's the truth

Hm... sorry, Joe, but gonna have to disagree with you. The only people around LA asking for Mark II's basically have no cash. And even those people are beginning to find seriously low rates on RED MX's.

Just yesterday, though, on a union gig I had the hacked GH2 out shooting next to Epic, and to my surprise even the Gaffer and Key knew what the Gh2 was, and had all been hearing crazy things about it. The C300 was also popular. The comments on Mark II line up with what most people are saying: it's done and over. Too many burns, too little to offer.

I am referring to both the cameras ONLY!
I do a lot of reality show sizzles for pretty big companies there..they come to Vegas and are always wanting to shoot with a 5D, Red, EX1/EX3, HVX200 and others. But come on, do you really hear them say, "were looking for someone with a GH2?" No, be realistic. And again I am comparing to the 2 cameras. We just did the Manny Pacquiao documentary with Academy award winner Leon Gast, they asked for a 5D for the Interview shots.

I'm being realistic. The difference is 5D's been out longer. We're comparing the two cameras and the GH2 stomps the 5D all day long, it's just taking time for people to catch on.

Like I said, when you hear Union Gaffers and Union Keys talking about a camera, you know it's just a matter of time. Everyone around here in LA knows 5D is poor quality, and nobody WANTS to shoot with it. Pretty soon they wont' have to.

Disclaimer: I dont' do reality, I do broadcast advertising (national) and narrative.

Kholi,
I think the GH2 is a superior camera with its hack...very true. But I am talking from a business point of view, we're talking about when you get hired by a production company that needs to get something really quick in another city or state or if they don't have their RED or any of their $20,000 + cameras. I have been hired by many and you know that I had my hacked GH1 and loved it but I don't get the business from big production companies that come out here looking to find a videographer and they always ask "what do you shoot with?" they advertise "in Vegas for a shoot , need someone with a RED or even a 5D" we get that a lot. We even did The Ron Artest sizzle reel from a big production company and they specifically asked for the 5D.

Just takes time, man. Hack's a new development, and Canon's got a pretty good grip on their marketing.

My barometer's how the commercial and narrative industry moves, and who talks there. I dunno about documentary or event shooting, videography type stuff. That, admittedly, is not my area. Once the majority starts hearing, that's when things will change.

Wasn't like the 5D came out and was suddenly where it's at now, it took time and the no-budget sector championing the mishap for major sources to hear about it, then try it. Hack's been in effect for what, Six months? Hasn't gotten as serious until two ago? Just time, man.

MKIII ought to put out as great an image as GH2, if not then something's seriously wrong.

I have given up on that wait for the MKIII..lol. It's been hyped for almost 2 years now.
New cameras come out all the time, of course better ones will come out. MKII has been out for 3 years and still does its job.
GH2 is a awesome camera that's for sure...but I think the MKII blows it in lowlight..DUH! lol
nice chatting buddy.

Nah, let me know when you side by side them though, then come back with the results. I'm willing to put money on that; from experience. :]

The 5D era is really coming to an end, professionally speaking. It's camera which at one time was quite novel and everyone wanted "that look", but now it's the only look there is. In reality, if you were to shoot the same scene with a 5D and a hacked GH2 side-by-side and ask the client to choose which one they wanted, I don't think there would even be a hesitation.

True! But how often are you going to shoot first and show them the comparison afterwards. I can go to LinkedIn or CL and search in the gigs or wanted ads and I would say that the 5D comes out in the search more or should I say is the only one that will come up.
You guys forget, the DVX100's and HVX200's are still being sought out for jobs by a lot of production companies still. So for the 5D to die down now? I really think it will be a couple years more.

IMO I thought that Philip did a pretty good lowlight comparison.

Phillip doesn't know much about the GH2 or Hack.

People are allowed to form their own opinions, it's just better to hear it from people who've actually tried/done it, s'all. I've got both cameras, I know first hand that the 5D only has Sensor Size over the GH2, maybe a slight edge in DR. The rest? Nah.

But anyway, whatever floats it.
