C100: top handle: how much weight can I put on a rig for it to be safe???

Hey guys,

just purchased a C100 and adjusting my current rig for it, which of course adda a bit more weight.

I would like to use the camera's top handle that attaches on the shoe mount.

Anybody knows of a overall weight limit when using the top handle?

Thanks!

I would be reluctant to put a lot of weight on the handle when you consider how much pressure would be put on the hot shoe area - it's a relatively small contact area. Perhaps a Redrock Micro cage for the C series cameras or similar would be a better idea as it encloses the c100 and gives you a top handle.

I had a JVC HD 100 that developed a very loose handle because I had rails etc attached.

What equipment are you using with the rig?

btw I saw a photo on another forum of a c100 with cracks around the hotshoe. There was no explanation about what happened but perhaps the user dropped it or added a lot more weight to the camera.

Thanks Drew.

Yes I am a bit reluctant too. Dont want to put too much stress on it. Basically I have a redrock shoulder mount as the base plate using rods with a cavision follow focus and matte box.

It doesnt feel too heavy, but over time who knows. I just dont want to take a chance wearing it out.

The Redrock cage looks good, but it is pricey.

Thanks again!

same question as well

there is no perfect cage now that does the job currently. either you lose audio if you are using redrock micro's cage + top handle, or you risk your c100's top handle when you attach that on top of the cage.

my suggestion is to buy something like the zacuto QR shoulder pad and build a rig around that, let the c100 sit on your shoulder, and simply attach a handle on the back rail of the camera (behind your shoulder), grab that along with front handle with care. (never touch C100's handle).
