C100: Top handle 1/4" thread destroyed!

Wow. So, I tried screwing an articulating arm into the 1/4" thread near the back of my C100's top handle, something I've seen heaps of people do before. No excessive force or anything when suddenly BOOM, the whole thread somehow breaks off. Doesn't strip, just... breaks off: http://i.imgur.com/Q1ch2Od.jpg

Anyone else ever had this happen to them? Feels very flimsy to me, but it must not be an issue since I've never heard of this before.

EDIT: Entirely user error. Don't screw things in too deep. No issues with build quality!

That sucks! Sorry to hear that!

I've read about a C100 with cracks around the cold shoe where the handle attaches but what caused it is not clear. Its because of that that I bought a baseplate and rods to allow me to attach my Zacuto evf and other devices.
 
Bummer. But on the bright side, at least it's just that one little threaded part that broke. It looks like you could get a replacement swapped out easily enough by using just those four screws.
 
The four screws don't actually open up the 1/4" thread block. They look like they do, but the raised bit is actually just part of the larger top section of the handle itself.
 
i had this happen a long time ago. i had a SmallHD EVF on a short adjustable 90% arm. the part that screws in snapped off. the part of the screw thats in the handle just "spins" and no option to bore it out since it just spins. forget unscrewing the four phillips screws and think thats going to get it out and solve your problem...it won't. from what I've been told the whole handle "the rubber underneath" needs to be taken off and there is other stuff in there to deal with. there is no simple fix short of sending it in to canon. its flimsy and i highly advise to all using the c100 to "NOT" put anything in this mount that has some weight that can "pull" off to a side. only things with a good center of weight dispersion so it doesn't get "pulled" in any outward direction.

i bought the zacuto gorilla plate. not cheap but worth every dollar and should have done this sooner. i also just bought an "Easyrig" for the C100. i don't trust the C100 handle to latch & hold since its only held on with one point of contact so figured i needed to buy redrockmicro C100 cage for strength. i love the C100 but some aspects of it are on the dainty side and i don't have confidence it will handle too much stress. it would have been nice to not have to build out my C100 with all of this other heavy stuff but oh well. on the other hand the C100 when stripped down to nothing but what it is...is still a killer camera to hand hold.

since the screw that stripped is so flimsy i don't plan on getting it fixed.

Yep, I've sent it off to Canon for a repair quote. Fair chance I'll just get it back without repairs, unless it only costs like $30 which I doubt it will.
 
i can't imagine it would be less that a few hundred dollars but id like to be wrong. can you please report back when you hear from canon on pricing?

Just today I saw a photo of Erik Naso's C100 with a GH4 WITH A LENS ON IT mounted to this same 1/4" thread. Say what?
 
I have wondered if something like the Zacuto Coldshoe could be screwed into this location using the 4 screw holes, it's something I've been meaning to look into as I've thought the screw was a bit flimsy, and this would be quicker and would stay attached all the time on my camera:

I have something very similar to that screwed onto mine. Not a $35 Zacuto cold shoe, but an no-name $5 cold-shoe haha. I primarily use it to mount lav receivers when I need to mount 2 of them, or have a videomic on the front, lav receiver on the back.
 
I do love my friction arms, but I was thinking something along the lines of the Wooden Camera UVF mount, with that really rock solid linear adjustment. Definitely far from essential, though - and I've been spending way too much money!
 
Same thing happened to me, with DP4. Now, to hold the DP4, I just use a clamp attached to the handle or to a rod under the camera.
 
Wow, didn't even think it was still under warranty, but what do you know, they repaired it free of charge and it's on its way back now.

But yeah, not really feeling too confident about actually using it now.
