Top DoP's for RED

I was short listing the DP's who've had experience with high end digital cinema, and was wondering if anyone here had suggestions as to who to add to the list. I'df primarily concentrate on guys who could hit the ground running with RED (or at least take the least amount of time). I'd like to get less expensive options though :)

Here's some DP's who I know could hit the ground running with RED :

David Stump
Claudio Miranda
Dion Beebe
Matthew Libatique
David Mullen
Dan Mindel
Harris Savides
Ivan Bird
Evin Grant
Brook Willard
Jarred
Ketil Dietrichson
Eduardo Serra,
John Bailey
Slawomir Idziak

That list is far from complete. If anyone has additions, they would be appreciated. Besides wanting to create a RED directory, if you will, for my own company; I was contemplating putting together a meet/info session with a DP (Toronto users group included, mayhap). It would be purely for my own edification, hence the delineation of a DP list for this tech...not a bootcamp per se, because Jarred does those better than anyone, but an informal 'get up to speed' and discussing the 'art' of RED digital cinema.

BTW, if one of the above listed DP's read this forum and would be interested (and plan way in advance like me ;)) then I'd be more than chuffed ("indie" monetarily compensated of course)...

Lol. I think I understand what you're saying, but let me try and clarify in case I read you right.

I wasn't intimating that RED was only for top DP's. Of course not :) What I meant is if you (dvxusers) know of a DP's work you admire, who has worked with the Viper/D20/Genesis/F950 etc... before, then I can add them to the list (for me). It could be anyone from Japan to Canada. From Independent to Studio.

I've always been of the belief that one should try and learn/mentor from the best, when possible. Seek out excellence where you want to be - aim for the moon and you can't help but hit a star... You'd be surprised about the opportunities that present themselves when you open yourself up to this philosophy. That doesn't mean you limit yourself to those people, because everyone starts from zero - even the guys on the list - and native talent is native talent, regardless of colour, nationality, income bracket, etc... However, since RED is a new frontier (for me), it would be advisable to seek out those that are familiar with the terrain.

I know there will be a lot of field testing and experience before a lot of useful real world examples will be logged, but I know I could use a fantastic knowledable DP (not necessarily big budget ASC) to get me to up to speed quicker. Maybe , I'm the only one?

BTW, I once spent a few hours talking with David Ayer about script writing for the exact same reason...Funny how passion is translatable across income backets

EDIT : Added names :)

Being from Toronto I will defininatly following this. Red culture will have to do something here in the near future. A little bird told me of a new 4K projector that just got installed here, the city's first as far as I know.

Hey D and G... are you Dale?

Nope.

Also, the first list was just guys I immediately thought of (whose work I am familiar with) and was by no means comprehensive - no offence meant. :)

Hopefully, us Toronto peeps can get ahead of the curve. An informal prep meet for/with the RED cam, along with Jarreds bootcamps later should cover just about everything...

I'd be happy to try to host a Toronto get together at Technicolor on Ontario St. & Adelaide St East (across from Deluxe). A few drinks, some snacks, crazy chit-chat. And no, this is not a company plug - I'm a lowly freelance artist there, not a sales guy (besides, Technicolor is owned by Thomson who makes Viper, haha). But the boss is cool and it would be a good place to screen some 2K and 4K clips. Maybe I can even book a 2K screening theatre - hmmmm.... There are also a few good pubs nearby

Anyway, I'd love to meet some of the local Red-ites and talk shop. How does Jan/Feb sound?

Sounds like a great idea. :) Feb. would probably be better for me since I'm going to be in Ireland for a few weeks in Jan., but don't let that stop the Toronto crew from getting together in Jan. at a pub. I'd never advocate skipping Guinness/favorite drink here.

I wonder if their are any CanadianSocietyofCinematographer members who have reserved a cam? Hmmm...

I think creating a list of digial dps is a bit of he mark. It really doesn't matter what the tool of choice is; it is how you shoot and the results you achieve. If you like it, learn from it, don't worry about what camera was used because then you miss the point.

Cool. Feb sounds better. I'll stop highjacking your thread and bring this up again in January. Hopefully we'll have some more footage to screen by then. :)

Maybe. Alas some of the CSC memberd I know inspire less than full confidence. I wouldn't make that particular credential too high on your seach-list (besides aren't you a Wong Kar Wai fan? I'm trying to imagine Christopher Doyle conforming to the CBC aesthetic :( ) .

Anyway there are a lot of local shooters well versed in CineAlta and Varicam (tons of local episodic stuff) in addition to film. I've got some names if you're looking.

asap

asap

I'm all for a meet, esp. if we can get together to screen some sweet 2/4 k from Spike. Sooner the better, but considering the timeline for the assembly of the camera and subsequent shoots, Feb is probably the earliest we could hope to see any of that.

Count me in. I won't be back to Toronto until late Jan/early Feb. But I'd be very interested in hearing about others early Red experiences/techniques. Hey, maybe we can wine and dine Graeme Nattress to make it worth his trip to Toronto (he's in Ottawa after all).

LOL. :)

For the CSC, I think it's more the state of the industry (what genres pay the bills) than anything else as a contributory factor to the type of work done. All of which is another reason I think RED (may) break down traditional barriers to some productions, allowing native talent to take advantage of the possibilities.

Poi boy, I concur that the skill and talent of a DP is independent of the medium. But, since so much of RED's final look will be determined (when shooting RAW) in post, I was hoping - when RED first comes out - to get a DP who is familiar with the post production path, along with the traditional cinematographic skill set. If all I needed was a great DP, then I have a list of names (who've shot mostly film) to rely on. Some of whom are friends. At the outset, for my own learning of the toolset, having one who knows the terrain ->post path might be a better choice.

If RED accomplishes what it's set out to, at the price point they've determined, then there'll be a plethora of cinematographers who've not only heard about "digital cinema" (Viper, D20 etc...) but will be shaping it personally.

EDIT :Feb. sounds like it's shaping up to be a good time. Look forward to meeting, mates .

Eduardo Serra is a genious! He is also a honorary ABC member as of last year, hehehe even if he doesn't write it after his name!

AIP [LINK] either but he's the first honorary member!

I saw the born of this one. I was there but I didn't assist the birth...
