1) A Shot In The Dark (1964)
Peter Sellers' funniest performance. He created an iconic character in Inspector Clousseau. Bumbling, idiotic. It works on so many levels. Peter Sellers is the funniest man to be in front of a camera (followed closely by Chaplin and Keaton).
2) Blazing Saddles (1974)
Mel Brooks' opus. Easily his funniest movie. Its not just gags that make this film funny, its the dialogue, and performances by Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, and Mel Brooks.
3) Airplane! (1980)
Abrams and Zucker. What a team. This film will go down in history as one of the best comedies of all time. Leslie Nielsen (known for some serious roles before this film) was shot into the higher echelon's of comedy after this film came out. Peter Graves (also known for his serious roles before this film) delivers one of the funniest lines in the film "Ever seen a grown man naked?" Classic.
4) Some Like It Hot (1959)
Marilyn Monroe. Jack Lemmon. Tony Curtis. The latter two, dressed in drag throughout most of the film. Hilarious. This film just works. One of the funniest endings to a movie I've seen. "Oh Osgood, you don't get it! I'm a man!" "Nobody's perfect."
5) The Pink Panther (1963)
Sellers' first performance as Clousseau. Classic. Everything I said about Shot in the Dark can be said for this film as well. Sellers was one of the best on screen comedians of all time.
6) It Happened One Night (1934)
Frank Capra, Clark Gable. One of the funniest films that Frank Capra made. This along with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, solidify him as one of the greatest directors of all time. This film was the first film to win all 5 of the top Academy Awards. Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay.
7) Animal House (1978)
John Belushi. Tim Matheson, and a young Kevin Bacon. Classic John Landis and Harold Ramis. Their best comedy. Set around college frat houses, this film is a classic comedy. Toga! Toga! Toga!
8) Young Frankenstein (1974)
Another Mel Brooks film. Written by Gene Wilder. Wilder himself said this was his favorite of all the films he did. Mostly because he wrote it himself. It's got Marty Feldman as Igor, and put one of his set gags into the film, with the switching of sides of Igor's hump. Great stuff.
9) Monty Python & The Holy Grail (1975)
Classic Monty Python. Their best outing in films. Followed closely by The Life of Brian. This film has some classic comedy in the film, and classic lines. "Tis only a flesh wound!"
10) The General (1927)
Buster Keaton's best film. Tremendously funny. Doesn't rely on dialogue to be funny. It's all in the acting. The mannerism's and expressions on Keaton's face that make this film funny. A lot of people dismiss this film simply because it's in black and white. Please give this film a try. You won't be disappointed.
