High Speed car chase

great video!

love the sound too. i think the only thing i can think to mention is that they are doing some very dramatic turning of the stearing wheel and at those speeds turning the wheel slightly would be enough to go from one side of the 2 lane road to the other. They were turning more than half a circle with some turns and that would definatly fish tale the car or flip it.

Cool video

You should see how some of the guys in my car club drive in the canyons...

But all our cars are heavily modified ofcourse.

I truly enjoyed that! The only thing that was bothersome to me was the lighting continuity. On some scene cuts you can see that they were shot at different hours. That was the biggest thing i noticed.

Yeah, I couldn't tell either. It was well-shot, but everything else about it left me with more questions than answers, or worse, bored. You know what makes a good car chase? Near-misses, evasions, ebb and flow. Here, with a few rare exceptions, you just have two cars driving in a straight line. It didn't feel particularly thrilling and after a while it was simply boring. A lot of the cuts seemed unmotivated, and the same with the sound design. I hear horns honking for no reason; worse, I hear the same repeated doppler effect horns used more than once when it doesn't match what I'm seeing. It distracted from the action and the story.

Now, obviously you're doing the best you can with the resources you have, and I'm definitely not suggesting you go out shooting anything more dangerous than this in a guerilla fashion. I think what you have here could achieve what you want it to (assuming I've even guessed that correctly)... if you cut it down to about 1/4 the current length.

Watching it out of context, all I can comment on is the success of the technical aspects of the scene alone. So those were my thoughts. Sorry if you weren't calling for a critique. I don't even know if you directed it. :)

haha "this is a comedy?". Almost seemed like it with the "what do you want from uuuuuuuuuuuussssssssssssssss?!". The acting was subpar but everything else was really nicely done i'd have to say. Oh except for the transition from the guys just driving to them being in a chase. Seriously, there just like "lalalala vroom my american car is badass...hey look were being chased, let me just floor it". You gotta add to the realism. They should be wondering why there being chased, who is chasing them, and mainly, no person ever just floors it if there being chased. First they'll drive at a normal speed, make a few turns maybe just to see if there following them. But who knows, maybe this chase is already planned in the movie like the guy has been tipped off someones trying to kill him.

Terminator 2... niiice. :)

Pretty good chase. The sound was great, but there were a few problems. First, the actor in the passenger seat irritated me, and his line "what do you want from us?" just didn't feel right.

Also, there were some continuity errors scattered in there that got to me.

Other than that, it looked good, and you had some good shots. Nice speed too.

when he held out the "USSSSSSS" i kinda got annoyed, seemed cheesy, then again who knows, colors seemed to get lighter as it went on, oh well, i liked it

Hello everyone, thanks for taking the time to veiw this clip! There is actually one major continuity issue that nobody caught, in fact in the 1.5 years since I made this video, nobody has noticed it. In every wide shot from the street, the T-tops are on, and in every car mounted scene, the tops are off :)

The people in the video actually are not actors, and yes this is a comedy! Whos says there cant be a car chase in a comedy! A church hired me to make this video of the youth pastors trying to get to the youth event. There is much, much more to the story, the whole project was 8 minutes long, and the car chase was about 5 minutes into the movie, so yes, it does build up to it :) Maybe I should put the whole video online.

Outdoor lighting caused a problem as you can see. The last scene we shot was the stationary scenes, and by that time, the sun was going down. I also used a 1/500 shutter for some scenes, which I would not reccomend. When the sun came out, the picture was way too overexposed at times and deemed some footage unusable. Also, it snowed the next day.

Yes I used Brad Friedels score from T2 Judgment day. The "mall" scene is one of my all time favorites.

I agree the scene is a little longer than neccesary. I thought about re-cutting it, but Im shooting another chase this fall and now have an HVX, so it seemed pointless.

We did hit 120mph when making the 2 car pass. Make sure and put a peice of gaff tape on the focus ring, because when you go that fast, it will turn the ring on the dvx.

Yes, everything was gorilla shooting, and that road is known for people racing on it. All in all it was a cool project to do, if you haven't played with a car mount yet...you should!

There were a lot of audio sounds that didn't match and it did seem real cheesy. I thought he would get them to stop and one of the guys would say some lame punch-line and have it be a Sonic commercial...

However most of the technical aspects were very well done.

video was okay. Not a big fan. Thats cool you went 120 mph, but there are so many techniques that can be used to make something fast than it is....

there was too much variation in color from scene to scene, it just make the flow a little akward... and I do agree the "What do you want from ussss" was not performed too well.

but that car looked sweet, and the sound mix was pretty good.

Yeah i was going to comment on the T2 sound-score. I say get rid of it completely...and make your own soundtrack. Everything else here is original...why not go all the way? I used a side mount like that once, but was very cautious in going more than 20mph. I guess it holds up then!

go to: www.noahshulman.com

and to the CAPICU "PARA LA CALLE" video, there are a couple of clips in there with that mount.

Nice video. First I would like to see your rig. Can you post pictures of the car mount? I don't know if someone asked this already, I tried to skim all the responses before I posted.

Now for my subjective .02. Let me clear my throat:

1) The car mounted camera was nice, but the still and smooth camera didn't excite me. I would have liked to see some camera shake for excitement.

2) All dialog was cliche and hilarious, in the bad way. "What do you want from ussssssss" or "step on it grandpa" and let's not forget the classic "now that's what I am talking about!".

3) Editing could be better, but remember I am being picky to help.

Overall, you have a nice base to start refining your chase sequences to a higher level of professional quality.

Now for a completely subjective opinion: I would have not shown the "villain" driver. I found (in this short clip) he really had no point to the story. Instead of showing a cliche bald, "mr. biker" type villain, I would have been much more frightened of a mysterious and aggressive black SUV. The lack of human element in the villain and the mystery of not seeing the driver would seem very scary and menacing. Not only would the chase be exciting, but all the questions the victims are experiencing "what do you want from us?" or who is chasing them would fall onto the audience as well.
