Top 10 Comedies of All Time

I also liked The Life Aquatic and Raising Arizona.

The Big Lebowski too.

These are movies that make me laugh, which might be different than "good comedies" for people.

I'd consider Dr. Strangelove an excellent film but it didn't make me laugh out loud once.

Annie Hall
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Kicking and Screaming (Baumbach, not Will Ferrel)
Harold and Maude
The Big Lebowski
This Is Spinal Tap
Manhattan
The Graduate
Stranger Than Paradise
Election

Thank you! Finally someone mentions This is Spinal Tap. Quite possibly the funniest move ever made.

"But this one goes to eleven."

Also, as Richie White already said, Raising Arizona is comedy perfection.

"I'll be taking these huggies and whatever cash you got."

In no particular order...

THE APARTMENT
THE PARTY
PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES
MEET THE PARENTS
DUMB AND DUMBER
THE STOOGE
MONKEY BUSINESS
THE WOMAN IN RED
A NIGHT AT THE OPERA
HOME ALONE

I will probably wind up editing this as I am sure I am forgetting some...

AMC was just running a mini marathon featuring Don Knotts, the Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Reluctant Astronaut, and The Shakiest Gun In The West.

Special treat in the Reluctant Astronaut, you get to see Leslie Nielson before he went full on slap stick.

Dumb and Dumber
Kindergarten Cop/Cop and 1/2
Wedding Crashers
Movies that I can watch over and over and always get laugh

Romantic comedies seem under-represented so far, so here are my top 10, or at least 10 that I've watched a bunch of times and never get old.

1. Annie Hall (already mentioned, but my favorite Woody Allen film)
2. French Kiss (Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline; my favorite of several great Nora Ephron films)
3. The Philadelphia Story (Catherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart)
4. Notting Hill (Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts)
5. Sherman's March (Ross McElwee personal narrative, this one's a stretch, but a romantic comedy nonetheless)
6. Breakfast at Tiffany's (Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant)
7. Some Like it Hot (Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe)
8. Gregory's Girl (Bill Forsyth directed)
9. Big (Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins)
10. The American President (Michael Douglas, Annette Bening)
Bonus: Amelie

If you want romantic comedies, try Jewel of the Nile, and War of the Roses. Not a huge fan of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, but they are hilarious in these.

Ronmantic Comedies...HOLIDAY with Hepburn and Grant is awesome...Adam's Rib...God, too many to mention ...but can't see how you can have a true list that doesn't include The Apartment...That was an exceptional film...then again, these are all personal choices so I guess that answers that.

-Austin Powers (Not that I'm older, and I understand the jokes, I die laughing)

-Any movie with Jim Carey ('Cept that 23 one)

-Superbad

-Goodburger

6. Breakfast at Tiffany's (Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant)
Not Cary Grant, George Peppard (of A Team fame). Doesn't he look like Mel Gibson before Mel Gibson was Mel Gibson?

My List:
  • His Girl Friday
  • Father Goose
  • Operation Petticoat
  • Austin Powers
  • Spinal Tap
  • Airplane
  • The Incredibles
  • The Naked Gun
  • Support Your Local Sheriff
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Honorable mention to Mr. Roberts, Better Off Dead, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Raising Arizona, and The Thin Man movies. Although the rest of the film was lacking, the 'Birth Scene' in Ace Ventura was the single funniest thing ever put to film.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE His Girl Friday. Good choice. I said earlier I thought strangelove was #1, but HGF is probably a tie. I watch this movie at least once a month.

And I have to agree on the Ace Ventura thing too.

THE APARTMENT won 4 or 5 oscars...Billy Wilder movie with Jack Lemmon and Shirley McLaine...Never saw Joe's apartment but not a big fan of Jerry O'Connel anyway...
