GH3 Took The GH3 Out For A Test Drive Today

Hi Erik, thank you very much for sharing your beautiful footage with us.

I used the Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone. I was impressed with the sound recorded direct into the camera. Thats a big deal. I need to test out my wireless lav and see how full it is. If it's as good as I think it will be kiss the external audio device to the curb most of the time. I know the quality will always be better using an external device but for run and gun, On-Cams and interviews this will be a time saver!

Does this mean that you consider the amount of hiss on the GH3 beeing reduced compared to the GH2? Did you have the opportunity to verify this by direct comparison with the GH2?

Hey Erik,

Mine came today. Didn't get to shoot much before the battery went.
I love the build. There is gonna be some learning curve with the cam with setting up the function buttons and such. I did find out though that with the Lumix G's you can basically do a rack focus with the touch screen. Works quite well too with just a bit of snapping of the lens breathing. Not bad and could be useful.

The camera seems to have a better amount of color and chroma.
It feels like there is better dynamic range but that will have to be tested (Barry).
Got dark out before I could do much with it. But so far I'm happy with the camera.
Hopefully I can put some time into the cam during the week and will share anything I find.

Maybe I should read the manual too. Lots of settings in this camera....

I'm sorry but I dont. However the sound came out pretty well with the Rode. I played it on Vimeo through aple TV and it sounds pretty good. No hiss. I think this is very promising.

Oh yeah!!!!!
Build is nice! Truly a new camera. The menu is similar but just a few more options. I didn't go to deep on the stills side yet. The rack focus sounds intresting. I tried to shoot a time lapse but the settings where all messed up. The camera kept changing the ISO and shutter speed. That wont work. I need to read the manual for that.

Dont you hate the dead battery thing when you get a new camera. The same thing happened to me. I was pissed!

There you go! Excellent work Mr. Naso. That's what I like to see, people in the tests! Thanks for sharing.

BTW. like I said before. After not so long everybody will have to have one.

So a couple more things.

First, this camera auto focuses with the 12-35 (and I'll guess the 35-100) BRILLIANTLY! Just doesn't seem to hunt at all.
Second. I was playing with some high ISO I-frame shots and they look good. But they look incredible cleaned up with neat video. Better than I've seen out of other cameras.
Third. The monitoring from the LCD is pretty darn good. None of that BS from the Gh2 with color shifts.

One thing I should mention is how I white balanced the camera. I went old school and balanced the camera with a grey card and saved it in the select white balance setting. The GH3 has four you can save. I made two presets. One for full sun and one for shade. As the day went on I just rebalanced and it saves it. Worked pretty well. The shade balance seems a bit warm but I like a warmer tone. Easy to adjust in post if needed.

Amazing, GH3 footage without jitters or bad aliasing or a constant battle with finding focus?

Seriously though, great job, first time I've actually been impressed with GH3 video. Everything really looked super crisp and colorful.

AVCHD man, people should start testing that. Larger number doesn't necessarily mean better picture =X

Nope. But it does play back better in the NLE. Tomorrow after I finish an edit that needs to go out I'll play with the both of them. For FCPX users, don't forget to change the fields to progressive in the info tab on AVCHD.

Thanks for the test Erik.

I'd decided on the Gh3 a while back but didn't need them immediately. Then suddenly today I did.
After I saw some of your footage I wished I'd pre-ordered them.
So I jumped on eBay and found a pair...and rather than being greedy I only ordered one for this project and posted the avail of the other on another thread.
It was $1500.

Great test. Thank you. Sit here, waiting impatiently for mine to arrive. Weather is clearly the right one to test it in perilous situations right now over here..... no risk, no fun.

Can people make a new post and show off their un-edited footage of the GH3 and tell what setting, and lens they used. I am not looking for anything fancy or with music. I think a lot of us are still waiting to see footage before we buy.
thanks

I don't have any mics with a 3.5mm end so I haven't been able to test the internal pre-amps on my GH3. Have you had a chance to test going straight into the GH3 as opposed to an external recorder? I'd love to just get a XLR box and ditch the tascam.

Nice job, Erik. Thanks for posting.

I wasn't planning to get one of these suckers, but I might have to reconsider.

I connected the Rode direct into the GH3. No external recorder was used. I think its pretty darn clean. Download the file from Vimeo and play it on your TV or stereo.

Thanks!

Sorry if this has already been covered, but can the GH3 AGC be disabled or do you dial down the volume to 1?

Hi Eric
I've been following your articles and views for a good while now, having owned an AF101 in the past - I still visit the forum regularly as a big fan of the camera. Delighted to see you have an GH3 now (mine arrived today!). I am so impressed with it so far - images as good as my F3! I have great plans for it. Keep up the good work and best of luck going forward. Sparky
