Too Much Too Soon HELP!

Can someone give me a detailed explanation for how to get the UPSCALER plugin to work??? What easy setup and settings in FCP do I need to use and how do I need to output it? Thanks.

PS: I read the txt files and I don't understand the instructions, what is a slug? Do I apply the filter to the slug or the clip?

Sorry I'm dumb.

Check your fcp manual. Once you know what a slug is and how to create one yes that's what you apply the filter to. Good luck.

Found out about the slug. It's still not working for me. Could someone please give me an in depth explanation of how to do this?

this is to scale to 1080p right? i didn't have any luck but didn't try very hard. i'll take another look later today.

i think you have the manual, see help menu. create a slug on your timeline, add the filter to the slug, drag the clip to the well, done.

1080 or 800p for instant hd. What's the well? sorry, I know my way around final cut some, but am not good with names for things. Again, I did a google search for this as well and nothing came up. I searched the electronic Final Cut manual and it referenced clip well, but didn't explain what and where they are.

Just add the filter and it will become obvious. There's only one place where you could possibly drop a clip. That's the well. You can use an 801p sequence then instant hd on that, or a 1080p sequence directly for pretty much the same result. Instant hd shines for big scale factors but it's not that much better from 801 to 1080.

What's the well? .

Right across from Source Clip in the Parameter Column.

Cheers.

btw the very first hit on google.com when searching for "image well" and fcp explains it very, um, well. ;-)

oh, and since i've started using instant hd myself i'm adding that kind of workflow to the next version. it's a bit more complicated but it has the benefit of preserving the link to the master clip so you can add filters to it and such without having to add it to the well again, plus you only have to do the double nest once then apply both filters in the same place, the upscaler first then instant hd with the source parameter set to 1280x801 (plus maybe some tweaking of the center parameter since you can't center 801 pixels completely within 1080 without shifting/blending, which we don't want). i'm working with red giant on this one to create an "official" workflow. stay tuned.

Look forward to that matt. Thanks for the info.

none of this can be applied to pc correct? let me ask you this. I use the displacement map to correct the stair step and if I put it through Instant HD should I up-scale it to 801 or go for the full 1080? I haven't followed this any cause it seems exclusively for mac.

I haven't followed this either, but I bought neatVideo quite some time ago and guess I'm gonna go ahead and grab InstantHD to re-explore the D90 in this fashion.

So, as soon as I figure this workflow out for both PC and MAC (which should be within the next few days) I'll start a new thread detailing how to put Matt and Lee's methods (and whoever else's) to work step-by-step.

Unless someone does it before I do, which is also welcomed.

Beckspace's 1080 material looks really really nice, I'm planning on putting a webseries into gear in the next few weeks and while I was considering a 5D MK ii for principal, I'm thinkin' about the D90 once more.

So, again, as soon as I figure it out expect a step-by-step postflow guide for gettin' some clean 1080.

Kholi, I have a step by step for stair stepping, but never used an up-scaler, but this is for PC. I haven't really needed to output 1080 before. Also never use the neat video cause I never have noise issues. After tomorrow I'll put up some "decent" stuff and a workflow to go with it. If I can up-scale to 1080 properly. I got it figured out to where I'm gonna do 1 scene in the day/dusk and another at night.

if i remember dorrectly the displacement map just removes the stairstepping, it doesn't recreate the missing lines. the reason we're talking about 801p is that this is the "native" resolution of the d90, and by interpolating the lost 81 lines you remove the scaling artifacts, stairstepping included, plus you keep all the information for either scaling back to 720p or up to 1080. scaling 720 footage by normal means to 801p does nothing. if you use the avisynth script (or that other ae project template) you can just remove the last scale function and what you get is a 1280x801 image that you can then feed to for example instant hd, or simply scale up to 1080p using lanczos or your favorite super res app.

yes. just remove the last scaling function from the script and the result becomes 1280x801 which you can then scale as you see fit. the easiest way to get 1080p is to just replace the numbers so that it scales to 1440x1080 instead. lanczos scaling is pretty much on par with instant hd, even though the latter handles ringing around edges better.
