This is a new one for me. I don't normally work with anything coming close to the more abstract and surreal side of film making so I have had some problems with this project from the get go, but it has kind of evolved to its natural conclusion from my perspective. Anyway, take a look and I hope you enjoy.

Tone Large
(40mb)

Tone Small (20mb)

Feedback of any kind welcome.

Congrats...always a difficult genre to work in. Can't say I understood the story particularly...I guess it is about an inability to communicate/express himself with the girl. Be curious to hear what your take on the story is.

The grade looks lovely, I've used a similar effect in a film too. I lifted it from Soderbergh's "The Limey" but saw it was used in last years Bourne film too.

I thought the camera movement and zooms were mostly very controlled and you responded really well to the scenes with the camera.

Good acting too...these films live or die on the strength of the actors.

Very good. Weird, but in that good abstract way. Good acting/directing too. Lots of emotion without dialogue. The sound design had to be my favorite aspect though really tied it all together for me. The grading/processing looked good and fit very well. For a rather strong effect it didnt stand out at all. Very nice work. Makes me want to go make a film :)

question - how did you do the streaky look?

I don't know how you edited the sound but it turned out REAALLYY good. same with the picture quality. Excellent overall. What sort of camcorder did you use?

Thanks for looking guys. I don't really want to go into the story, as I am looking for people to make up their own interpretation as to what is happening.

egyptian, it's all on a DVX.

Glad you all liked it.

I think he's going crazy cause his girl dumped him and won't return his calls.

Great sound design and look.

at first i thought the rainbow like flare effect looked a little out of place in the footage but after watching it a second time it didn't seem out of place. so i guess that means it added to it.
nice job!

Thanks for looking guys. The grade was a little ambitious for sure, but I wanted to push it purposefully, glad it seems to be working.

Very interesting piece. I felt like everything was working in concert... the stylistic sound design and visuals were all subjective in a way that worked together very nicely. Usually I see those things (especially with grading) being simply style for style's sake but I think they contributed here to your overall theme.

i liked it. i'm pretty into abstract and thought that your first atempt was really good. the streaks looked great, reminded me of punch drunk love. the shaky camera was a good touch but in some spots it was too shaky and took me out of the story. overall i dug it. nice job will!

looked pretty sweet. the first 15 seconds or so i was really confused but i was drawn into the story quickly after that. good choice stylistically with the colors and such.

Any reason why you chose such a wide aspect ratio?

Thanks Doug, getting everything working in concert is a challenge for sure.

414, I run everything flat, +5 master ped, and Cine-Like_D, but honestly the raw footage doesn't resemble much in the final piece, I did some heavy grading.

Edit: Didn't see the other posts, thanks a lot for the comments guys.

As for the 2.40:1, I don't know... It's just how I think and visualize my pieces 95% of the time, it just works for me.

Zak, I wish there were options like that :) would make this board a lot less cluttered.

I don't own a dvx (yet) so i'm not familiar with it's aspect ratio controls. Can you record in 2.40:1 or did you just crop? Shooting in/around that ratio has been a goal of mine but my editing software (Premiere CS3) doesn't have, or I can't find, a way to edit in this anamorphic like ratio.

Any tips?

I shoot squeeze and crop in post. You can just make a matte in photoshop for 2.40 and bring it into premiere to overlay over your whole project.

some nice moments Will. seemed like a study of sorts... congrats

grading? did ya run it thru the da vinci resolve, etc.? or did you just tweak in FCP, etc. ?

i ask b/c i'm getting ready to grade a docu that i've been working on for a while; using the da vinci. -cheers
