Tokina vs Tamron

Stuck between Tokina 16-50 or Tamron 17-50.

Also need a solid broll lens...looked at the Nikon 28-300.

Any thoughts?

I have the Tokina 28mm-70mm. I'm waiting for my Nikon mount to show up so i can test it out. It ends up being a 56mm-140mm with the crop factor but that's pretty standard for a B-roll lens. I figure on getting a wider one to balance that out later. Plus side is the 28-70 doesn't extend while zooming, so it's mattebox compatible.

I have the Tokina 11-16 and it is an amazing quality lens. I know you're not talking about that Tokina, but what I know is generally Tokina is a high quality built lens and Tamron is not quit as good. Now as for optics I don't know.

I have the 16-50 and have been using it with a 'dumb' Fotodiox adaptor while waiting for the Birger, using grad wheel and variable ISO for exposure changes, keeping the lens wide open. Really sharp and easy to use.

Having said that, just took delivery of a new 12-60 Zuiko f/2.8 for a little more than the price of the Birger that still isn't available. Now that's a lens! Extremely wide and sharp - I can live with the f/4 at the longer end. Have also been looking at the Zuiko 8mm f/4 for really wide shots.

Also have a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8

Does the Oly 12-60 on the Af100 make any noise?
I had the 50-200 and returned it because it make an awful racket when zooming and using the on cam iris control.
Is the zoom stiff?

Seems a little stiff out of the box but using as a variable prime, don't think it'll be a problem and no objectionable noise, yet. Relatively speaking, the Tokina is a bit smoother but I've had that lens for 6 months.

I've used the Tamron 17-50 for the better part of a year and have been pretty satisfied.. I've used various Tokina lenses, but not the 16-50. From what I understand, the Tokina has better optics but the Tokina has better build quality. I've never been disappointed with the build on any Tokina lenses I've had (five of them) but the optics are kind of hit and miss depending on the lens.

The Tokina 16-50 has a push-pull feature on the focus ring to turn af on/off which is a nice still photo feature, not sure of any benefit for video. At any rate here's a short raw clip (64MB) with the Tokina on a 7D, handheld probably @16mm.

Tried the oly 12-60 toady. Had the same rackety noise the 50-200 had when using zoom ring and iris wheel on the cam.

Tamron 28-300 was pretty sharp. I'm going to try it as a primary broll lens for day shoots/exteriors.

Nikon 50mm 1.4 is a f-ing beast on the af100! wow!

Might not make sense to most of you but my lens setup is going to be this:

Tokina 11mm-16mm/2.8.
Lumix 20mm/1.7
Nikon 50mm/1.4
Tamron 28mm-300mm/3.5-5.6

I just won an Ebay auction for the Tokina 28-70 f2.8 ATX Pro SV AF Lens for Canon EOS. Cant wait to try this lens out. It should be a great all around lens and it seems like a good value. We shall see.

I've got the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and 50-135mm 2.8 and they both seem pretty amazing. For the midrange however I'm going with the Nikon 17-55mm. The telescoping zoom on the Tokina 16-50mm just doesn't work for me.

The zoom doesn't telescope on the 16-50, the focus ring goes forward or backward to turn the AF on or off.

OK, gotcha. I was picturing the push-pull zoom like a 100-400. Yep, that would be inconvenient with a MB.
