whats the tokina's focal range without noticeable distortion on gh13 16:9 video?

if its only 16mm, whats the point of getting it in addition to tamron 17-50? prolly for still pictures?

do you mean barrel distortion or perspective distortion? i doubt you'd really see barrel distortion with the crop. there isn't a whole lot to begin with. as far as perspective distortion, of course that will be there at the edges, since it's just based off focal length alone--and 11mm is much wider than human eye perspective.

if barrel distortion happens in center, it will persist in m43 sensor. perspective distortion... its effectively 22-32mm equivalent. i presume there gotta be perspective distortion wider than 28mm equivalent. then usable range is only 14-16mm?

not quite sure what you mean by "usable range". it's a very good lens throughout the range, but what's fine for some isn't fine for all. i use it full wide all the time running on my steadicam, and in most shots, the barrel distortion isn't noticeable. also, the barrel distortion effect wouldn't be as great on the smaller sensor. the further you get the edges, the more the straight lines are going to bend, and since the gh1 sees a smaller area of the lens, the effect wouldn't be quite as dramatic. of course, since the gh1 has it's multi-aspect sensor, the crop is more like 1.8x when shooting 16:9 video instead of the regular 2x. i use it all the time with my 7d. many professionals are willing to pay $3500 for the duclos modded PL version, so it's definitely a great piece of glass that many people find more than just usable across it's entire focal length range. that said, you may have extremely high standards for what you'd consider "usable". i'd say watch some videos, or just rent one.

Damn! $3500? I paid $600 bucks for mine brand new. Couldn't imagine going much higher than that. It is indeed an awesome lens though.

wow rich professionals. tokina should make one for pl mount.

tokina 11-16 and tamron 17-50 seem great combo, and its good to hear that tokina can be used for more than photo.

Personally I hate the over bearing perspective of this focal range. Fine for photography or static establishing shots, but I wouldn't want to move my camera on the wide side of this zoom.

I love that combo. My friend has the 17-50. I've used it several times. Definitely more versatile than the 11-16.

I love the 11-16 for action and steadicam shots. It'd definitely be out of place in a drama though

Has anyone used the 11-16mm Tokina for shooting real estate?
I'm wondering if it's wide enough or would I be better off with the Pana 7-14mm?
I'm needing to shoot still & video, I'd love the 7-14 but price is a bit out of my range right now.
Any lense suggestions would be appreciated.

That's all shot with the 7d and a combination of tokina 11-16 and tamron 17-50. I shoot real estate tours part-time. The lens would still be nearly that wide on a gh1. I guess they make adapters to control aperture? You can also check the new sigma 8-16. One thing great about that tokina is the constant f2.8. Some rooms aren't well lit, and that definitely comes in handy.

Just watched your tour, great work thanks so much for sharing it
.
I'm looking at doing similar work in my local area in the not too distant future.

From what I saw with your work that combination works well, I was going to buy a 7D but decided to get a GH1 first as a travel camera & for the hack.

I could always try the 11-16 with an adapter & buy a 7D later.

Yes with some adapters you can control aperture, but manually only from what I've seen on the net.

Thanks again for sharing
