Tokina 11-16 Nikon or Canon mount

The first company to bring a simple electronic iris and perhaps power the IS for canon lenses is going to rake it in. The birger sounds great, but its obviously a very complex device based on the delays... Adaptimax should skip the 16 blade iris and move to an electronic mount with simple iris control and perhaps power the IS...may not be a simple engineering task but would probably in the long run pay off better than a "better" kipon.

After careful consideration we decided to skip the built in iris version. In testing we had decent results but overall not good enough to bring about a release. We pride ourselves in producing excellent products and the Canon EF with built in iris control fell short of our overall expectations. We continue to sell straight forward Canon EF to Micro 4/3 and will continue to do so while the demand is there. As for going into the electronic version, we have decided against it as we are almost running at full capacity right now and have just released the Nikon and Canon EF versions for the Sony F3 and are working on new adapters for the new Sony NEX range of camcorders.

The list in front of us never seems to shrink!

When choosing a mount option for the Tokina 11-16 I went the EF route as it made the most sense given the fact that I already have other EF mount lenses, as well as Canon bodies. If you own other Nikon mount lenses then obviously an F mount Tokina makes the most sense.
At this point I'm using the Kipon EF adapter until the Birger mount is available. The Kipon adapter, in my opinion, is not machined to exacting tolerances as there is a little play in both the EF side of the mount as well as the M4/3 side of the mount which equals slop. This is exactly opposite of the Kipon C/Y mount adapter I have, which fits snug and works perfectly with all my Zeiss Contax mount lenses.

All the Best!

Well I have the F-Mount for my other Nikkors but I'm seeing the Tokina won't allow me to stop down to open up...it'll be stuck at F2.8. That's unacceptable and the adapters I see are crazy expensive which is disappointing. :/

You won't be stuck. There's plenty of m43 to nikon f adapters with a mechanical aperture controller to actuate the lever. They are all on eBay. The first one was made by a seller called ceicio7 after I forwarded him a video of underdahls design to do the same on the red one. Other sellers have made them too and for cheaper. You'll prolly spend between 50 to 100.

(Edit: I did a quick search on eBay and ceicio7 is no longer around but if you search "m43 to nikon g" you will see a bunch for under 50 dollars. I looked at one by seller topvshonw and could see the mechanics in the pic he provides)

Before such adapters existed I still managed to shoot a bunch of jobs by controlling the aperture with this trick. See my post #4 here

Probably a good business decision. Putting a second iris before the rear element struck me as a little bit of a desperate approach but I say this on a hunch as I have never seen or tested myself. Since you have done preliminary tests I'm interested to know what image aberrations or loss of sharpness occurs from this approach. If u have a minute please post

Hmm I guess I'm a bit confused because some say the Nikon G to 4/3 is what I need and yet I see others talking about F mount which I already have an adapter for (my old Nikkors). Can anybody make this clear?

An f-mount adapter will let you mount the Nikon version, but have no provision for iris control. A Nikon G adapter with iris ring control (such as the Novoflex) would let you have the ability to adjust the iris on the Nikon G version of the Tokina.

Get the nikon and get a good adapter (adaptimax/novoflex) with iris control, and then you can use it the AF100 keep it for anything going forward. If you need to throw it on a 5D or 7D, you can get a adaptor for the 5D with iris control and it will act like a MF lens... like you even need autofocus and OIS on a 11-16mm lens... PS. Inside secret, the Tokina will cover your 5D FF sensor from 14-16mm, 15mm-16mm with out any issues, so don't write it off for use with the 5D just because it is a DX lens... at 15-16mm it works great on FF.

The name of the nikon mount is called the F mount. The older nikon lenses like AI and AIs have a manual aperture ring and an F mount.
The newer auto focus nikon lenses like the G series the DX series don't have an aperture ring and use internal aperture control but the name of the mount is still the F mount.
When these ebay sellers are selling a m43 (micro 4 3rds) adapter to a nikon G lens what they are selling is a m43 to F mount with a ring around the adapter that moves a the lever inside on the back of the lens. Back in the day when we were all buzzing over the GH1 there were only a few adapters and they were all quite expensive - the novoflex being one of them. There are many more options today, look around. But you tend to get what you pay for.

IMO the two ideal nikon zoom lenses to get for narrative drama work would be the 17-55/2.8 nikon DX and a tokina 11-16mm f2.8 dx nikon mount. Get an m43 to F mount with aperture controller. Pick up some vintage nikkor primes for low light and rack focus shots and you are golden.

Ok so I do need to get that Nikon G to 4/3 adapter to control iris. This might sound ridiculous but will an adapter like that still fit my older manual iris nikkors without having to swap the adapters in the field? That would be ideal to have an adapter that fits them all and when I need it allows control of iris on the tokina.

yes, all the nikons use the same mount the F mount. Vintage manuals should be fine, AI, AIs and even pre-AI. Some of the very very old ones, pre ai, have an extra protrusion on the back which prevents the rear element touching the table in the event you place it down without a rear cap. My 35/1.4 prime was like that and it still fit.

Maybe don't get the cheapest adapter tho, it might be a waste of money and time. I can't review the novaflex that Barry mentioned as I have never used it. Also use google to search dvxuser as there are many threads already here. eg
"best nikon adapter gh1 site:dvxuser.com" will search this site only and give u a lot of hits
