GH4 Tokina 11-16 for use on GH4?

Thanks for all of the input guys, very valuable and I appreciate it. For those of you who have flown the GH4 on a stabilizer rig of some type, do you believe the 27.6mm FOV is wide enough? The last time I personally used a Steadicam-like rig was with a Sony TRV900 with a fixed lens, I forgot how wide that was or if I used an accessory WA lens adapter?

C3hammer, isn't the UHD crop 2.3x, not 2.49x?

I may have had a bad copy of the 12-35 Panasonic, but it is moot point as I can't afford that much anyway.

I own the Tokina 12-24, it is a beast as far as size and weight for the GH4 so if the 11-16 is similar in size and weight, that would be a no go.

Bern, let me do some research on that lens. What do they sell for new? How long have you had it? What kind of shape is it in?

The Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 is still looking like my first choice, but not sure if it will be wide enough to give me the look I want? I definitely be shooting this rig indoor and outdoor so the faster F stop is important and the ability to take a variable ND is important. I would say an F4 lens is too slow and even a 3.5 is still probably too slow. I really don't like the GH4 at ISO 1600 and will only shoot 800 if I have to. The camera looks great at 200 and acceptable at 400 but past that, I am not crazy about the noise.

Bern:

I found this on the SLR Magic website in regards to your 12mm. "58mm, for Variable ND, step-up ring is required due to vignetting". What exactly does this mean? I already have a 58mm Tiffen Variable ND. Does this mean I will need a larger variable ND to avoid the vignetting?

I have a 58mm Tiffen VND somewhere around here so let me check. Most 58mm filters will vignette on the SLR Magic 12mm so they offer an optional 77mm step-up ring, but the Tiffen might not due to it's 62mm front element.

Here are the crop calculations from Mattoid in this thread - http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?319440-The-GH4-is-here!/page5

GH2 multi aspect in 16:9 = 1.91 (36 / 18.8)
Full sensor width regular 4/3rds = 2.08 (36 / 17.3)
GH4 in cinema 4k crop mode = 2.34 (36 / ((17.3/4608)*4096)
GH4 in Quad HD crop mode = 2.49 (36 / ((17.3/4608)*3840) (My assumption is that the GH4 will crop for quad HD as well as cinema 4k)

I can confirm that on my GH4 these are what I'm getting vs. full frame.

Cheers,
Pete

My new Olympus M43 primes have spoiled me as far as size and weight. The idea of mounting a beast like the Tokina while trying to fly on a Blackbird sounds less appealing than acquiring a small, light M43 lens, plus I have to also add in the weight of the Metabones adapter as well. I have the Tokina 12-24, it is really heavy, I would imagine that the 11-16 is in the same neighborhood as far as weight and size?

Thanks for the numbers C3hammer.

yslee, if that is the case, I definitely don't want the Tokina 11-16, way too large and heavy for my preferences when flying on a Steadicam-like rig

I just ordered the Rokinon 7.5mm. I'll post some samples after the 4th weekend.

For reference here's what a 17mm f/1.8 looks like on a stabilizr in 1080 96fps and 4K UHD. Obviously nothing like one of these ultra wides, but it gives an idea of how much this cam crops an image. It's a 35mm equiv in 1080 and 40mm in UHD. It's an amazing lens, incredibly light at only 115 grams and the reason this cam is so cool on a stabilizer.
http://youtu.be/g2SWcXzCb74 1080 96fps slowed to 24p
http://youtu.be/8A5chlSqu7Q 4K UHD (obviously wth NDx4 and cir-pol)

Cheers,
Pete
