To get rid of the 12min/4GB cap...

Recently i was at CW Pro London and was introduced to this:

There was a 5D there, but I didn't get to stay and see it tried out with the AJA Ki Pro.

If the 7D could output 1080p over HDMI, this could record it, allowing for much more than the standard 12 minute recording time. One for the future perhaps, after/if Magic Lantern 7D surfaces? The Ki Pro is a bit pricey compared to the 7D, but if you had another device for capturing via HDMI would this not lift that limit?

I was under the impression the live tap out of the HDMI port on the 7D was 480p- useless for something like the AJA.

5D en 7D don't output full HD from HDMI direct from the sensor.
I hope they will in the future. When they do this is a great but expensive product.
It'll bypass the H264 compression.

This AJA product is great for all camera's that output an uncompressed signal through sdi or hdmi so you can bypass the compression of the camera and capture straight into ProRes.

So it's not even about fixing the 12 minute limit. It's about capturing a straigh signal from the sensor without compression.

Um....from reports that we've been getting here the 7D does project 1080i from the HDMI out. It's just that 20% of it needs to be cropped off because of overlays. This yields an image that is a little bigger than 720p. I believe this is one of the areas Hudson (Magic Lantern) will be fixing. Matter of fact there are folks capturing these uncompressed images (I know...I've downloaded some of them and the colors are fantastic when using in post).

That's true. It's just that the 7D doesn't do it by default.

Syndicate has also a solution for this.

So why 1080i not 1080p output? Surely new firmware will be available at some point to remove screen garbage. It is very expensive, but turns 7D into ProRes recorder as opposed to H264. Perhaps there are other cheaper options for recording HDMI direct?

Right. I would probably never need over 12 minute clips. I don't anticipate doing interviews. If I do, I'll just work around that limitation. That's why I hadn't closely researched it.

I bought my 7D from National Camera Exchange because they had the 18-135mm kit lens in stock. On their site I happened to glance at video capture info and is says, "maximum video recording length: until memory card full." That is what caused my brief confusion...

Thanks for clarifying. My own visit to the canon website immediately revealed the 4gb/12min limit. Whoops. :D
