I have the 7d right and it has AGC and I now but I been watching these youtube videos about the 60D having manual audio gain control aka no agc and I hear that the 550d has a new firmware to disable agc. What should I do ? Should I downgrade ?

Agc or no Agc the audio from all of these cameras do not sound very good, so if it's for audio it's pointless. Nothing better than a good separate recorder.

Because youre asking for it.IF you wouldnt want to, you wouldnt ask.550D with MLantern has a lot more to offer than 7D .

Well the T2i doesnt have WB and ISO like the 7d. Also the 7D is weathersealed and easier to you with the buttons. Im asking a question to the pro's and cons

I've got the 60D and like it very much - the tilt screen is the important thing for me. Don't downgrade because of agc being disabled - the audio on all these cameras is poor. If you're not excited by the tilt lcd, I don't really see the point in downgrading - you've got the only canon camera with hd out over hdmi that doesn't change when you record, plus all the manual kelvins, intermediate iso's and so on without having to do a hack.

my 02

Yes it is available on the T2i and so is the manual kelvins WB, intermediate iso's, and new intermediate shutter rates.

Read Magic Lantern thread here to see whats in menus, download latest relase to read userguide.pdf ,you will get idea whats there.

Ragdoll is correct. I'm probably old fashioned about this, but if you're on a paying job, I wouldn't be using a hacked camera. It's a reliability thing.

But the no AGC is available on the 60d and t2i with ML right ?

What don't you understand? I used a t2i, 7d, and 60d.... It doesn't matter if the agc is disabled or not because the audio still sounds like ****..... There simply is no other way to put it. So if you are just worried about audio, than NO it is not worth it.

But I like to record directly into the camera though with Rode Video mic attached.

For what? Shorts and narratives? If you want your films to even sound like there in the ball park of a real production, you need to get the mic off the camera and on a boom. Get a external high-res sound recorder like a SoundDevices or a Zoom H4n. The AGC hack is nice... but sort of pointless because the audio should be done separately. The Rode video mic is great for a scratch track for syncing with though.

Why not using an pre-amp like the one from JuicedLink (http://www.juicedlink.com/) and a 60D or hacked T2i? That way you can record directly to the camera. The quality should be equal if not better than the Zoom H4n (Comparison). Still though, you can't use it with the 7D, except you're buying the JL-DT454 which defeats the AGC.

I dunno you guys... I've been hearing about these bad pre-amps, but where are the examples?
Meanwhile, I've found plenty of examples using mics straight into the camera that sound just fine. AGC was the biggest reason to go external audio as far as I can tell... but that is no longer an issue with the 60D or ML.

Perfect example, THIS is what people need to see (hear?)! The comparison link there proves internal audio is attainable. I, for one, would love to not have to carry around another device with its own battery and memory card and go through extra steps in post to sync up the clips.

Still, if someone wants to share an example displaying this "poor pre amp" problem, I'm all ears! (ha!)

UPDATE: One reason external audio might still be preferable- Monitoring! I don't like that I can't plug in headphones and monitor the audio in real time. Not sure if its worth carrying around a separate audio recording for most situations, but something to consider.

even sound like there in the ball park of a real production

blaaaah blah blah blah... what a pile of hyperbole.

Point is if your an indie - writing / shooting / editing then yep you can REALLY do without the head ache of post sync audio if you can turn off auto gain control. Ive always recorded on sync in cameras, from the hvx200 to the hpx500. Wow... they were even real productions too...

Of course there is always a less convenient method to do something... eveeeen better. But for relative convenience then YES i'd definately consider - if no hack is forthcoming for the 7d, to conisder the t2i or 60. Honestly it sometimes feels like reading techies responding from a prayer book ;)
