I am attempting to use after effects to simulate a Coin flipping.. i have never dove into the 3d modeling portion of the program. I know it exists but i know nothing about it.

I'm not looking for an answer from the public, tho it would be nice. But rather a reference to a tutorial site that will explain how to create this effect. Please let me know if you have any information on how to get this thing flippin' sexy. Thanks!

AE doesn't do 3D modeling.
You can move 2D layers around in 3D space, but you can't extrude objects. You can use shatter to extrude an object, but this wouldn't be considered modeling. If your looking for detailed edges or anything sexy with regards to the finished product you should use a 3d application to create your coin flip.

Actually Invigorator would be really really easy to do that, you just make the coin shape in illustrator, take the front and back face with transparency and use it as layer maps and animate the hell out of that coin. Quick and fast, send me the images and ill do it for you just for fun! and even record it as a tutorial to show you how to do it for later!

two more ways you could do this in AE:
1. You could stack duplicate layers (like 60-100 deep) by hand or use a program like Trapcode echospace then PreComp, (make sure to check the continuous rasterization tick box) then rotate.
This intro was created by hand in AE: http://vimeo.com/7480371
I would make one silver circle or what ever color your coin is to be in Illustrator then create a front and back image the same size. Use Trapcode echospace on the circles to build your depth then line up the front and back images. Then do your PreComp.

2. If you have CS4 AE and PS you could create the 3D image in PS and AE will read the PSD 3D layers and you can fly all around the layer in 3D space.
Here is a basic 3D AE tutorial.

One thing they don't get into is that you can tear the comp tab off into it's own window then create a script by pickwhiping the camera in the 3D layers comp to a camera or Null object in your main comp and the 3D layer will rotate around just like you were working in true 3D program.

Hope this makes sense and Good Luck

This tutorial & preset from Graymachine.com (Harry Frank) shows you how to create 3D text within AE using the stacking method Brett mentioned. It's pretty nifty and works fairly well with some limits, but beats buying a new plugin or software package to achieve the desired effect.

Im going to go make a tutorial on how to use invigorator and make a coin and then make it flip, then ill come back and post it on here for ya!

Oh yeah good point.. well I went ahead and made a nice looking silver dollar HD with alpha flipping loop for you, you can use it and scale it or through it in particular or whatever you like man....
Enjoy, and remember... Lee of 337Studios.com gave it to you!

(i hope this works for you, and others use it if you like as well, might as well add it to your collections!)

skettalee ... that looks really cool. I tried saving it to try a few things with it, but I can't get it to work. There was no "save as" option. How do I save it?

I just get "reload" and "print" as my only options.

EDIT: I'm so freaking stupid sometimes. Thanks. Got it.
