Tips for reducing artifacts?

Just wondering if there were anyway to reduce artifacts (non-creatively).

Right now it's either keep the actor in a relatively fixed position or move the camera with the actor. If the actor moves up or down or across while the camera is in a fixed position I'm noticing some artifacts when watching the mts file (it's fine during in-camera payback)

I haven't yet converted the footage to MPEG4/MOV/FLASH -- whatever. Is the artifacting due to it being an mts file? Ive already dropped the footage from 24mbps down to recording at 12mbps so that my dual core pentium D would be happy with the footage (it can do 17mbps, but I'd rather go for the longer record time and -should be- smoother playback).

I've always used mini-DV. This is my first time using SD cards input via USB.

Thanks!

You don't mention which camera you are using, but I am guessing it's one of Canons' consumer cams.

I own a Canon HG21 which produces very clean images in good light, but produces very noisy images in low light. This is the limitation of using consumer cameras with consumer grade imagers.

On the software front there is a very good noise reduction plug-in from NeatVideo ( neatvideo.com ), that works with many common NLEs. It turns a noisy clip into something quite useable.

Otherwise, if you can afford it you can upgrade to a prosumer camera ( I just bought a Panasonic HMC150 ) to be able to produce clean images in low light.

Depends on the camera. XH-A1= Turn AGC off. Set the manual gain for -3, 0 and 6. Try to use -3 and zero. Use the preset appropriate for the lighting.

Prosumer models, use the cell phone trick and lock the gain.

Idea: what are you viewing it on? If you are looking at a preview screen in your NLE it will look ragged due to not reading every pixel for the sake of speed.
