Timefest entry "Survival"

Great stuff here. Most everything was solid -- love the voice over, love the soundtrack (though apparently not everyone felt the same way). The board-hit was very well done (though realistically maybe a bit too much blood). Cinematography was great.

My gripes have already been voiced -- the way it was edited made it seem like it would impossible for him to catch up with the van, and we should have at least some acknowledgment that the girl exists at the end. You don't necessarily have to show whether she's alive or not, but by completely ignoring her, it isn't leaving things open-ended -- it's leaving the audience feeling jipped.

I love how it comes full-circle in the end, returning to the "how long..." questions. I love the toilet-paper on the knife-handle; I'm a huge fan of character details like that. All in all, this is definitely one of my favorite entries I've seen thus far.

I wish I could sit down and talk to every single one of you who've commented on our film. I can't type fast enough to respond adequately to all of your insights.
Would you guys seriously watch an extended version with an actual "ending" ending? Re-shoots may be possible, if we can get Kevin's VW running again...

I would. I would love to see just a little bit more of this one. It should help tie up a few loose ends.

Hopefully you'll check out my Director's Cut. I hope to post it before this festival finishes.

Cheers,

Mike

Well it sounds like we are just gonna have to make sure we tie up the lose ends and make a longer cut for all of you out there who need just a little more "SURVIVAL".

Great looking film, and I really liked your choice of shots, really well done. But...I gotta say I'm tired of seeing the serial killer thing. I'm almost at a point where it seems this kind of short is too easy to come up with. I would have liked to have seen a more inventive story.

cheers,

JP

I love your movie. Very good camera work and editing. You did an outstanding job. I just don't like a small portion the ending. What happens to the girl at the end? Did the kidnapper let her go and why?

Cool thanks for your opinion. I am just curious as to what other films were like ours because I watched ever single entry and didn't see any that were even remotely similar in any sense of the word. Unless you mean the obvious victim and tormentor, but that aside it was a different story twist then most but thanks for your comments we appreciate all that people have to say. It just makes us better filmmakers.

Just wanted to give my thoughts on the ending:

I dont think anything else is needed with the girl. When she wasnt there, I just assumed he disposed of her and now this guy is about to go through everything she went through. Out with the old, in with the new. You could have shown a fresh grave, or her dead body on the ground outside, or alive and tied up inside, but I honestly dont think any of that is necessary. I was 100% fine with what you showed.

I totally vote for a new extended ending that has some of the girl's clothing nailed up on the wall or something. Leaves you with a shiver implying what happened without really being explicit. I think that without ANYTHING you guys have taken two fingers, wrapped duct tape around them, and jammed them into the audience's left eye as sort of a "screw you guys. We're artsy fartsy filmmakers and we aint gonna tell you what happened." ... Just my interpretation, of course. You may actually have metaphorically taken three fingers and done this.

It is more like a sharp stick to the testicular area, after wrapping them in duct tape, metaphorically speaking. We shoot like a Viennese Waltz, because we are artsy fartsy makers of film.

I really liked the look of this but could do with out the voice over and the music box. I had to turn down the volume because it got annoying quickly. I agree with others, I was looking for some kind of indication that she was chopped up or something and he was next.

I really liked the feel of this one and a lot of the cinematography. The dusk/night sequences looked absolutely fantastic -- very reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw and Wolf Creek. Kudos on getting that look down.

I thought the VO was almost fitting... something was a little off about it -- can't put my finger on it but it might've just been his performance. Worked for me for the most part, though.

I'll also echo some of the thoughts on the ending. I'd have liked to have seen something, I think as subtle as a piece of her clothing -- as Mark said above, but otherwise I do like it coming back around and ending on his questions again.

All in all, this was a cool entry and I had a lot of fun watching it. I'd love to see you do a piece for the Horror fest... Or All Hollows... The scary fest.... whatever it's called now.

Thanks I must say i have enjoyed receiving comments from other filmmakers who's films were among my favorites. So with that I really appreciated it.

Lisa had a great idea for a horror short . . . I wrote it yesterday and it ended up being thirteen pages long :Drogar-Mad(DBG): so I guess it's out of the running for scriptfest and too long for a scary-horror-hallows-death-fest too. Unless they change the rules to 15 minutes instead of 6?
Wow. What if Timefest allowed 15 minute entries? Anybody do the math on that? Insane.

Also, I'm just curious: For all you folks who have problems with the score (and I'm not saying it's perfect either, one of those "do the best with what you've got" elements), anybody know a good composer? Or would anyone be willing to write something for it if we end up doing some re-shoots after the fest?
-This will probably help us decide if it's worth spending a lot of time fixing or if we should just move on to the next fest and take these lessons to heart on that one...

I think we should just leave it the way it is and concentrate on the next fest...
Sorry guys we put too much work into it already. Unless we can figure out how to get some funding to re due it. Anyway I vote that if you want it done send ideas
HERE .
Thanks,
Pauly
