TIMECODE on p2 vs tape

Ok So we are going to shoot a film in 720/24pn, but do to equipment issues we are going to then take the 720/24pn footage and go to tape and do an offline edit with the sd mini dv footage and then im going to do an online edit later with the HD footage elsewhere. My question is can I get a uniform timecode between the p2 and mini dv footage so I can just use an EDL or am I going to have to peice it all back together.

It will preserve timecode. But why bother doing an offline and downconversions and EDLs and all that stuff -- FCP or EDIUS or Avid will fly with 720p footage, you will probably find it a whole lot easier to just edit it in its native HD state.

The reason for it is we will be editing in final cut 4.5 In chicago and then In Vancouver I will be using final cut 5.1 to do the online. Thanks for letting me know thats good news.

The upgrade to final cut studio from 4.5 is only $199. you will save yourself at least that much in tylenol costs alone by upgrading and skipping the whole offline online process.

I'm with tacotim on this one. It will be so much more heavenly to just do the edit once, rather than dealing with tape and dubbing and timecode and EDL and online and offline and ... and ... bah. Definitely upgrade and do it once, you'll be so much happier!
