Time Stood Still – An Extreme Low Light Video – Sony a7SII & SLR Magic 50mm f/1.1

Typically, I have been a RED / Canon C owner. Videos like this make it really hard for me to keep considering Canon.

I'm definitely becoming more of a Sony fan these days....(never thought I would say that) :)

Johnnie, I think you need to establish the darkness levels in the opening shot rather than at the end. Plus, you need some Gothic organ music. And wolves howling. And Vincent Price.

I read all the info over at 5D, but it didn't mention if any NR was applied in post, did you need to do that, or was S-log 2 Delut enough? Great video!

BTW, no Gothic music ... Jewish cemetery ... as I was watching this video on YouTube (it's there in 4K), something hit me ... I was in Vienna this week 37 years ago ... I even remembered the street name where we stayed - Kleine Pffarrgasse ... probably not far from that cemetery either ... a little nostalgia trip ...

Wow. That looked like crap.

I have an SLR Magic 12mm and it's crap wide open. It's great at f/4 it really is. But it's a steaming pile of poo at f/1.4 I'll be honest.
This video shows the same type of crap image that my lens gets too.

Yeah sure...there's "an image" at that light level in this video...but it's bloody horrible.

I'd lay money that a Canon 5D or 6D with a good Canon, Nikon, or Samyang 50mm f/1.4 with a little noise reduction applied would look about a squillion times better in overall image quality.

These Sony low-light tests are making people utterly take leave of their senses about what LOOKS GOOD.

It's a lens test done in an extremely lowlight condition. Hopefully as the manufacturer stated, it will be 20% sharper on all corners after being revised.
Some will be happy with what you can do with a fast lens together with a very capable high ISO camera, others will see no point in having this equipment combination at all.

Myself, I'm happy about the choice and possibilities.

Thanks

Johnnie

Fair enough Johnnie.

I actually REALLY LIKE the SLR MAGIC company. I'm getting ready to buy more of their stuff.

But their lenses are kind of like "frauds" to me because while they will open up too these really wide apertures, the image quality is so wildly degraded that it's really not even usable compared to THE REST OF THAT VERY LENS.

ANY lens maker could make their lenses f/1.2 or F/1.0 ...just let it open up farther - nevermind the fact that the image will go to crap. I feel that's what SLR Magic has done. If they were to simply cut off the iris range at the point where the image degrades - like most other lens makers do - then their lenses would all be F/2.8's and they would be GOOD f/2.8 lenses. But that doesn't grab headlines like "hyperprime" and "F/1.1" does.

I still have very high hopes for their forthcoming anamorphics and I suspect I will be getting a set at some point. But they need to stop with the silly low f-stops that don't actually work.

Well, interesting test, and thank you. But I would like to see something where you might say, “I could see putting that in my film or my TV commercial.” Maybe light a candle so you get a key light! I suppose this kind of footage would be acceptable for a short whispered nighttime conversation between two people in a reality show.
