time remapping and the HVX

Hey guys,

Have you guys tried to switch frame rates while teh camera was running? Is it possible? If not, is it possible to do it like someone had mentioned before: set each scene file with a different frame rate and then swap them while recording. Does that work?
I was just curious to know if this stuff really works.

You cannot do variable framerates on the fly. If it's like the DVX100, I don't believe you can switch scene files on the fly either.

I can switch scene files on my DVX. So I believe it should be possible with the HVX as well.
Ok, now we have a confirmation that it doesn't do variable framerates on the fly. Now, would it be possible with the scene files?

i might not have this correct but on the dvx if you switch scene files everything changes EXCEPT the frame rate - so if you go from 60i scene file to 24p, the color, master ped and everything changes but the frame rate does not

When I first started playing with my camera, I started switching the scene files, and it did in fact record 25p and 50i. Unless my camera has some sort of fault. But, I still have the tape where I recorded that.
Can someone confirm this, please. I still have the shots and you can see the difference between 50i and 25p.
Is there a possible fault in my camera?

No fault, mine does that to...
Maybe a PAL thing. Going from 50i to 25p is easier then going from 60i to 24p on the fly.
Well, I think...

Thanks Oliver!
I thought there was something wrong with my camera. Well, if the NTSC one doesn't do it, then the HVX does not do it either. But, I guess, if our DVX does it, then the HVX should, in theory, be able to do it, right?

You cannot change frame rates while recording. You must pause the recording before the frame rate change will take effect.

If you change the scene file while recording, everything except the frame rate will update. The frame rate will stay the same during that recording. Once you stop recording, the frame rate will then change to whatever you had the new scene file set to.

This is going to be a dumb question to a lot of people here, but what the heck.

The reason I'm asking it is that I thought from the title of this thread that there was going to be a question on the merits of time re-mapping in an NLE vs. slo- or fast motion in the camera. So here goes...

What is the appeal of under- and overcranking in the HVX cam using variable frame rates when time remapping is available in an NLE?
