Time Lapse

End of Fall

Hey I tried to capture clouds today doing it @ 30seconds, 0.5 capture time.

I shot for about 4-5 mins as a test. I dropped it into FCP and I sped it up to 600% and it was so blotchy still... Is it because I didn't get enough footage? How long should I record for?

Define "blotchy." Maybe post a sample?

But do the math: recording a half-second every 30 seconds for only four or five minutes is going to leave you with only 3 or 4 seconds of actual tape. That's not nearly enough to work with, or even to see what you've got. And speeding that short clip up to 600% is going to leave you with almost nothing. I'd let the camera roll for a half-hour so that you have enough to play with.

I'm not sure of all the settings on the DVX, but I've done a bit of 2fps on the HVX-200 with clouds, rolling for about 5 minutes, and the effect is great....of course I was picking out individual clouds, not going wide.

I have to agree with C2V here, that 3-4 seconds of video ain't enough to play with. I'd film for about an hour or so if possible.

Alternatively, I'd just roll tape in progressive mode for awhile, then increase the speed by some insane amount(like as in 1200% for 2fps, 2400% for 1fps, 4800% for a frame every two seconds, etc. etc.)....in my opinion this is the better option, as I do believe that the DVX won't do progressive while doing timelapse.
