Time lapse versus shutter life?

I've been doing lots of time lapse using both the 7D and the 50D along with the Canon TC-80N3 and shooting a minimum of 300-500 photos per time lapse. My question is pretty simple. What is the approximate shutter life (number of photos) for these cameras?

7D 150,000

Don't know about the 50D may be the same as 30D at 100,000

1D3 and upcoming 1D4 are at 300,000

Is it possible to use the shutter lock up with an intervalometer timer?

Shutter life has been 150,000 cycles since 40D if I'm not mistaken. In theory, if shutter failure occurs at exactly 150,000th cycle, you will have around 300 attempts at time lapse at 500 shots per take. (500 x 300 = 150,000) but who knows what'll actually happen at that count.

Anyone have any idea as to the cost of replacing the shutter on either a 50 or 7D? Seems to me that it might be cheaper to use either our 40 or 50D's for extended Timelapse since the bodies are a lot cheaper.

That's what I'd do... since you're not shooting in the HD video mode you're not really needing the 7D just for timelapse.

Shutter Life, Video

Could someone explain how the shutter works in video mode?

Does the sensor just take samples every 1/24s?

What would be the lifetime limit of shooting video on a 7d?
(not the 12min cap)

The mechanical shutter is wide open during video- it's all electronic shutter. That's why you hear a click every time you shoot a still and why the viewfinder is black the second you switch to video mode- also accompanied by a click. that's the sound of the shutter.
