Time Lapse no operator

So I have a 100A. I need to do an 8 hour time lapse of an event space being set up... i really done want an operator. Im understanding the DVX will not run on its own shooting intervals of selected time?

If not are there any other cameras video/still I can use.. I will rent.

Thanks

If you don't feel like leaving your dvx unattended, most consumer still cameras have a time-lapse feature.

you can actually record 8 hours if you have another dv cam.
you just connect it with the firewire and the dvx will record 8 hours if you are there to exchange tapes (every hour)
so it's like the dv cam is used as an extra dv deck.

however, I've never done it so Thanks to Paladin, he tested it.
here is the thread.

Don,t worry about it.
If you are going to make timelapse, you don´t need to grab 8 hours, If you put an interval of 1 second / minute, you will obtain 8 minutes of video. Make sure you have the AC adaptor and a good tripod.
I had maked timelapses with my DVX 100 without any problems, but there are more choices to do it like EX1 or SLR cameras with intervalometers.

Here is my last production in timelapse:

Nice Riky.... looks great. Was it all DVX?

So it will just do its thing 1second every minute and I dont have to touch anything or even be there....
Thats all I need to know and will set it up this week for a test. Thanks.

Is there any alternative that could do a similar function, or would I have to manually record for a short period of time repeatedly?

Here's a question. If you connect a cheap MiniDV cam to the DVX100a via firewire, and setup the DVX to record externally to the cheap MiniDV, will that setup still work doing a time lapse?

I ask because time lapse recording is notoriously hard on the camera's hardware. Starting and stopping the tape mechanism repeatedly like that takes a toll. If he could transfer that wear and tear to a cheap, expendable MiniDV cam, that would be better.

I maked that production with EX1 ( wich have a very goog intervalometer option) and a still SLR camera with an external intervalometer.
I have used the DVX 100 intervalometer in other situations, like making of, mounting scenarios on spectacles etc

that's a good question. I would like to know the same as well.
specially time laps will have to be shoot for a long period of time so I would perfer to have my dvx not gain any hours.

Couldn't you run it into a laptop/external drive via firewire, capture 8 hours, and cut out what you don't want?

I think Premier has a capture function that allows flexibility in amount captured per minute, etc.

At least you'd save the heads on your cam. Just have a drive big enough to ingest 8 hours of capture.

Timelapse

You can easily make timalepase with a small canon still camera like canon G5 or similar and a laptop via USB.
then use the software from http://www.granitebaysoftware.com/ to setup interval, number of still/second, resolution etc
The software is free for the first 15 days.
Make sure you have a compact canon model or EOS compatible ( the small compact models are cheap and better).
When you have all stills, put in in a edition program, like premiere, final cut, or in After effects, or quicktime Pro and make your movie.

Good luck
