Time laps with people using HVX-200

Katsu Nakahashi, a visiting artist from Japan will be in San Francisco on Saturday. He and 20 to 30 volunteers will use 20,000 photographs to construct a giant photo sculpture inside a studio. I have a chance to video the work that takes about 3 hours. I need to compress the footage into a clip of no more than 5 to 6 minutes. Obviously the final footage will be in hyper fast motion.

I will use an HVX-200 along with FS-100 for time laps capture. I have never done any time laps video work. So based on the above description can you please suggest a frame rate that you would consider using? I did read about Barry’s hack for controlling the frame rates. Thanks

Well you may just want to use the INTERVAL REC mode on the camera, decide how long you want the timelapse to be (5-6 minutes?) and then figure out how many frames you want to capture every how ever many seconds and do the math.

To my knowledge, the only reason you'd want to use a different framerate would be to control the shutter angle, which would allow you to give the blurring/light streak effect. So if thats what you're after, you may want to use 2-8fps and open the shutter up a lot, then turn the iris up/use ND filters to compensate if necessary.

Also, if you are indoors and will have relatively low light (in terms of the HVX) and you may NEED to open the shutter up more for the sake of light... which would then force you to use the slower FPS to achieve that shutter speed (thus adding light streaks).

I second mikkowilson - you really ought to do some tests before this to get best picture possible and results that you are after.

If you have P2 media at your disposal, you may wish to try using one of the frame rate Hacks. Make a scene file setting and force the camera to shoot at 2 Frames per second. If you are unfamiliar with this, search the forum for the Frame rate hacks. It is not something you will be able to do from the menu. Panasonic does not mention these speed settings. I have shot probably 25 hours of footage this way,. It has not hurt my camera in the slightest.

I did a Circus Tent being put up from start to finish shooting at 2FPS. If it is indoors, set your shutter to 350, that will allow plenty of light. Adjust your iris as needed.

You will get tons of material on just 2 4 gig cards. I speak from experience. My time lapse of the Circus tent worked flawlessly. I have also done a Contractor laying Cement in a building, AND, building a brick wall, and another shoot pouring a foundation.

Ask Barry green or some others here for some tips on setup.IE: CineV or CineD. Shutter ETC.

You will not regret it. I think you can cram 3 or 4 hours on just 2-4 gig cards.

I do not know it you can do this with a firestore due to the Frame Rate Hacks.

Dont set on Auto focus and dont use the OIS. Setup your focus under a normal 24p or30 P setting, then switch to the Frame Rate hacked setting. You will not be able to focus once you are at 2 FPS with any accuracy.

Thank you all for your prompt and helpful replies. Today I got the news that I can use lighting. That will help a lot. I also learned that FS-100 in Version 4 does a good job of time laps capture. This afternoon I plan on testing the hack and we'll see what happens tomorrow.
