Time for a 5D Mark II sub forum?

With people over in Asia getting their lucky hands on the production models... Is it time for a sub forum?

afraid of canon 5DmarkII

afraid of canon 5DmarkII

They are not adding a sub section and they avoid talking about it. The obvious reason is fear. It's the only camera that could kill all others, and it hurts now that Sony only produces interlaced crap and Panasonic is practically dead in this field. We haven't seen one decent Panasonic video camera since the DVX 100. The 200, let's face it, is junk.

The Canon 5D will not be perfect but a serious competitor in the market.

You might want to take back what you're saying as Panasonic is my (along with many others: http://prolost.blogspot.com/2008/11/on-other-hand.html) hope for a REAL dual camera with their Lumix "G" prototype seen here: http://www.photographyblog.com/index.php/weblog/comments/panasonic_lumix_hd/

And best of all it will most likely be under 2 grand with a rediculous 14-140mm lens. Yes it's not full frame 35mm but it will hopefully shoot 24p, have full manual and auto control, and shoot to AVCHD which several prototypes suggest with the logo on the back!

The 5D Mark II is nice but only the beginning and it will not kill out Panasonic as Canon never knew how to do video right and still don't with the 5D MK II. No 24P??? Jello still visible in whip pans???

Regardless, this is going to be an exciting year :)

gint12b, thanks for the link! this is really interesting. And I am glad to see that Panasonic are not just sitting on their old glory letting the market evolve without them.

Still, it's sad to see that apart from the prototype, there is nothing decent from Panasonic on the market for now.

By the way, reports indicate that there is no Jello in Canon 5D pans. Jello is strong in Nikon D90 video (which is unusable anyway), and Sony EX1 to a lesser degree.

I'd beg to differ based off of several tests I've seen on Vimeo. It's not NEAR as bad as the D90 but still not up to a reliable professional standard unless it's locked down:

http://vimeo.com/2234433 (Note the Jello right after the pan)

If you use a tripod you'll be fine. If you handhold you will be risking it... It would be great for studio work but not quite reliable yet for uncontrolled action in the field.

could it be a compression problem maybe? I'm not completely sure it is jello. You might be right, but I would like to see a raw file instead of the vimeo compression

Are you on drugs?
There are so many people here earning their living or shooting indie films with the HVX, on what is this blatant remark based?
And you are actually calling a D-SRL "a serious competitor in the market"?
What "market"...?
Oh I´m sure the new 5D will sell a lot more unit just because of the video feature, but it will rather create a new "market" than truly rival cameras like the EX1 or HVX...

I talked to Panasonic at the Retail Imaging Show in London, while trying out the G1 they said this version is a still camera. And that they won't be adding video to it until the second version.

I used it at the show and was almost impressed.

The electronic viewfinder of the G1 is very similar to the old Konica A2 in quality and performance, and in burst mode has a very annoying blank period after the first image acquisition. The Konica was worse, blanking out all the time in burst mode. It means that I missed the second frame in burst mode, and possibly the third, after which it seemed to come back and continued to work for the remainder of the buffer.

So the G1 is not going to replace my Canon 1DmkIIN for sports any time soon.
But it might become a pocket camera to replace the Canon G9.

If you have an account on vimeo you can download the original file that came off the camera. Go frame by frame through it in Quicktime and trust me you can see the rolling shutter. Not something I want in my video, don't know about you...

the hvx200 is a far more professional piece of video kit than any DSLR will be for some time yet, I thought about selling mine when all this DSLR hype started, but after seeing certain limitations on both the v-dslrs, I now realise the hvx is well worth keeping.

I'm still buying a 5DII though as it is lightweight and less intrusive... with very good results for certain shots.

I apologize to all about my poor choice of words for the HVX. I correct myself, it's not junk. But it's hard to dispute that its image quality is no longer among the best. Even a $600 Canon HV20 produces better video than the HVX.

i've not used the hv20... but I assume it doesn't have high end features like filmic gamma curves, master ped, 180.0d etc. does it have 720/60p? Crystal clear 720/24p?

If you are not getting a good image from the hvx, you are doing something wrong

True, the controls on the HV20 are not up to professional standards. They are not even up to serious amateur standards.

But it's chip is superior and produces excellent images. I live in Europe and use the 25p mode. I'm not sure how the American version works, I think you have to remove the silly pulldown.

The HVX200 is a nice camera but I don't believe I see a resolution really higher than 960x540, even if the picture is interpolated to save as HD on the P2 cards. Also, of course the HVX200 has excellent controls but the ergonomics of that camera are so bad it's beyond perversion.

Have you used the HVX with a good monitor setup? I can pull out perfect 720p everytime... and quite often perfect 1080p. Focusing is the biggest problem to overcome, but once you have a monitor, it is easy.

I'm not saying it is perfect, but it has a look that I just can't imagine a handheld camcorder could ever pull off. It took me over a year (and Barry's DVD) to start getting what I would consider perfect images... I guess the hv20 is more point and shoot, which gives quicker, good results... but there is always a trade off.... in this case... getting your gamma, white balance, audio etc perfected.
