Time Code on Display

Hey, I have a quick simple question about the DVX-100 (the first model). Is there a way I can get the time code to display on the screen, but not print on the tape? I'm wanting to know becasue I want to log shots and take to a report so I can where everything's at on the tape and which shots to use.

Unlike many older analog camcorders. Unless you specifically tell it to, DV cameras don't burn anythign over the recorded image. The onscreen information is just displayed over the image by the camera.

Timecode and other data is always recorded on the tape seperatly from the picture. Use the display as you wish durign both record and playback. The picture on tape will not be effected.

Okay, thank you. Now, how, or is it even possible, to display the time code? I'm not sure where the setting is at. I've gone through and I think it may be under some sort of alias that I'm not familiar with.

So mikko, is it possible to capture the footage to NLE WITH all the OSD info displayed?

Displayed where?

On teh screen of the camera? sure! - And on the analog outputs if you use that for a monitor in your edit bay.

You wanna see that data in your NLE? Well all NLEs have a camera-timecode diaply in their capture window.

But you want that OSD data bruned onto the tape when capturing? That's harder and not normally done (why doul you?) Though some cameras can brun some of the data, liek date & time onto the video if you want - it's a feature used for legal stuff where a timestamp is needed.

Yeah, I want to get the DVX to display time code on it's flip screen. Where's the setting to do that, but not burn to the tape?

MIKKO-

Sorry, I'm confusing the issue.

The reason I ask about transfering that info onscreen to NLE is for visual reference while watching the footage. I wouldn't use that for the actual edited footage.

I asked in another thread about finding shutter speed info while in the NLE (if changing it while filming and I didnt really get any help.

If I could recapture the footage (to Vegas) with all the OSD information on the picture then I can see all my info for the different clips and see what I was looking at.

(At fight training I was experimenting with different settings, and now that I have the footage in my computer, I dont know what the settings for any of the clips are.)

Sorry again for confusing the thread.

And to EGOS - my cam always has shown the TC on the LCD. I just had to check to see how to remove it in order to get you an answer..

Okay. Open your LCD. The lowest left button is labeled "Counter". Press that to cycle through the different counters available. TC is one of them. It will not record this or other info over your picture.

GageFX,
I don't know of any NLE that can emulate the OSD of the camera.

All show the timecode seperately in any playback window - and many can burn this actually over the video too.

The DV datastream does include, in adition to timecode, meta-data for; date & time, shutter, iris, gain, and other bits of data from shooting. Not all cameras actualy record this data - I'd be supprized if the DVX didn't.

I however don't know of any NLE that can decipher that meta-data from the stream and display it on playback. It's a feature that I too would often like to have.
One thing that *may* work is to have the camera connected to the computer with it's OSD on and see if it can read back that data as it comes out of the NLE. Hmm.. I will have to test that tommorrow!

I don't think that even DVrack can show this info.

Okay. Thanks for the time and thought. I do use my DVX connected to the comp and SVHS to a monitor for playback during editing, and the TC is displayed, but no other info. It might be able to be set to display the rest, I just dont know how.

Thanks again,
