Time code beginner help please?

Hello I'm new to dvxuser and obviously still learning my camera. My question is I have my time code set to "FIRST REC TC ---- PRESET" and went around doing some test footage which turned out very nice. I then ejected the tape imported some of the footage to final cut and am wondering, since on the LCD it says my amount of time I filmed or TC rather, how do I que up my tape to that timecode and begin filming so I get no breaks in time code? Thanks a lot for the help.

Put the tape in and do a "blank search." The camera will search for the end of the time code and stop at the end. Once upon a time, it was a common practice to "black" a new tape to lay down an uninterrupted time code from beginning to end. I still do this on occasion. I use one of my cheaper cameras (the ones I use as slaves and capture cameras) so as to not put unnecessary wear on my DVX100B.

I do not want to start a whole new thread, but I have another TC related question. When I put in a new blank tape in my DVX, how come the TC is like 01:33:25:10 instead of 00:00:00:00???

If you are using Rec Run>Preset, it stores in its memory the last TC value that it had laid to tape. You have to go in and change the preset to get it back to zero.

But honestly, I never have any tape start at zero. You should start each tape with a custom hour mark. This is especially handy on shoots where you'll have multiple reels.

Set your first tape, "Reel 1," to 01:00:00:00.
Set your second tape, "Reel 2," to 02:00:00:00.

And so on and so forth. Just try not to hit the end of the tape, because the hour mark will roll over before the tape is full.

This way, in post, you know which tape you're looking at by the hour mark. Though, if you get past Reel 23, you do have to go back to 1 since there is no TC 24, 25, 26, etc. If you have every tape start at 00:00:00:00, how do you keep track of multiple reels in a project? Yes, if your tape logging is as thorough as it should be, you'll survive. But having the hours mark the reels makes things so much easier.

MENU>RECORDING SETUP>TC PRESET>YES

Then you'll need to use the joystick to set each value (up/down to select, push to move to the next).

Once you've set the TC, press MENU and it will ask you to confirm the setting. Select YES.

Done.
