"Tie Can Do" - Official thread

I was pleasantly suprised at how serious my amatuer actors took the entire project. Especially some of the more dangerous stunts:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG).

Finally, got a poster put together! Things are coming together to make it across the line in time!

Second viewing of the entries.

Nice job. I was genuinely surprised at the ending. And I really liked the music. Very cool. Some of the camera angles (such as the car mount) were great.

As for the stuff that didn't quite hit me so well, I have to say that the ADR (especially of the female agent) was distracting (was it recorded in a cistern?) and took me out of the piece. As well, the female agent's delivery of lines (and perhaps the acting in general) really did not sell me at all. But again, that's just me.

Thanks very much for making this and letting us comment. Nice job.

Tie Can Do -

I loved the silly nature of this. I'm not sure if that's what you meant but that's what I took away from it. My criticism would be the inconsistency in the audio - obvious ADR sometimes. When she runs to the tree and hides behind it in that big flouncy dress I just crack up. The scooters also had me laughing. I liked the ending because of the French! Adding different languages ALWAYS makes your film more sophistocated! Lol.

Thanks all. This was my first attempt at ADR. Had to, cause the outdoor recording was too windy. Next time I would spend a few more bucks and record in a homemade sound proofed setting. Much was done in my office with no sound proofing.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you thought it was fun and that the twist at the end worked.

Next time, I hope to enlist a slightly larger crew. As you can see from the credits, it was mostly me. My only real production support (other than my wife's comments) was a composer, but she got sick and had to bail. So I had to do that as well. It was my first fest, so I had fun.

Thanks again for the comments!

Standard Disclaimer: I've yet to see a bad film so far in this fest. Congratulations to every film maker, everyone did a great job. All my comments and criticisms are meant to be constructive and helpful and in no way am I trying to take anything away from what you accomplished.

Good: Good story idea. Toy to the groin was funny as was the scooter riding. The car monitor composite looked really really good.

Not as Good:
I'd suggest reframing the boss as he's talking through the monitor in post, these shots are usually centered and more of a close up (see mission impossible, charlie's angels, etc.). It was noticeable that you recorded the audio indoors and dubbed it over outdoor footage. Acting could have been stronger.

Sidenote: Agent Hanson sounded just like the actress from "Wasted" in the DramaFest (which is a good thing, love that voice).

Kurt,
How much fun is this one! Yes, the delivery is a little stilted, but actually, that makes this all the more charming. And your actress wasn't afraid to exaggerate a little, which pushed the camp factor and helped alleviate the effects of the delivery. She was great. So gung ho and earnest.

Your special effects were great. Very polished and clean.

And that kid is awesome. The oversized shirt along with the big lose tie and that big helmet helped sell the "mistaken identity." I mean, really, who would think this kid was a spy? He looked like a kid doing an afterschool paper route or something.

Very fun piece. I'm going to share this with my kids. I think they'll get a kick out of it. :)

I found this movie extremely charming! Great concept and well executed plot twist! Loved Agent Hansen....she was high larious and the mom was great too! Good job!

Just got back from vacation.

I'm glad a few of you found TCD "charming" and "fun". I think everyone involved in the creation had a good time. I'm also glad to hear that the "reveal" worked OK for at least a few of you. Originally, I was planning on putting all the red tie guy footage up front before the mission setup. Then with time pressure I had to overlay footage and found that it worked much better. I really feel like I came up with a solid storyline (begining, middle and end and on-topic).

Thanks for the FX comments. I'm no pro at CGI, but I thought they came off pretty nice. I use Blender and sturggle to get good models built. I did the compositing of the screen in Vegas and added the satellite in AE.

In defense of the audio...next time I will do better. I hear that people will forgive shoddy video but not poor audio. Still, I'm glad I went down the dubbing route on this. There was way too much wind noise outside for most of the shots. I learned a bunch in the process. Namely, that it's tough to ADR, both for the tech (me) and especially for the actors/actresses.

It's interesting about the response to Agent Hanson. Her character is supposed to be a bit of a nut, but from her perspective she is serious about everything.

The other thing I'm noting after viewing other films and taking a critical look at TCD is that so much is tied to solid directing. Getting good performances from talent(audio and visual), nice shot selection, and lighting all trace back to strong direction.

Chris_f => I see what you're talking about the reframe of the boss. Setup the shot, then cut to a full-screen. Others did similar shots and it can be clearer, more interesting and add excitement. Thanks!

Thanks all! Keep the comments coming.

Yes, I agree. A charming little film. I too will let my kids watch this one. I like the simple effects, like the monitor in the dash and the satellite hologram from the phone. Good stuff.

Thanks for screening.

Dang it! i was gonna say charming.. hmmm cute naw... defiantly let the kids watch it... for some reason the music made it happen for me very fun film..

I guess I must be prince charming. Anyone seen any flies around here?

Seriously, I'm happy to have made a film that people can share with their kids. My kids liked being in it and watching it.

I'm glad the music worked for you. I had a composer on the hook who eventially dropped for health reasons. Our one meeting was helpful though. She was the one who suggested a H. Mancinni-like score. I was lucky to have found this. Music does make a huge difference!

Thanks for the watching and commenting!!!
