"Tie Can Do" - Official thread

Yes, I did finish the shoot on Sunday. We got lucky with two great weather days! All but one shot takes place outside. That segment was shot on a lightrail in town. It was late in the day and the train was pretty full. Shooting guerilla style on the train was really fun. I liked the pressure of working against the clock.

Due to an oversight and dealing with constant bus noise at one location, I did miss a single shot. It's mostly a transition shot, so I may be able to drop it. If I have to reshoot, it will be quick. I'll just have to see once I cut everything else together.

I did get a chance to cut the intro scenes together and drop in some ripped CD music, just to add a little flavor. So far, so good. I wish I could continue with the edit, but I'm out of town for work for a few days. Arggghhhhh!

Probably the best part of the experience so far has been working with "The Talent". I don't work with professional actors, but I'm constantly amazed at how well the people I cast perform. They take direction well and they seem to have faith that I got it all under control! Gotta follow through!

As for the composer, thanks for the link to Leo. I'll check out his work and see if I can work something out!

Larry - Excellent work on LEAP OF FAITH. I really enjoyed it and Leo's music really fit seemlessly and enhanced the work!

Msconce, I liked the way Leo helped bring out the tension in Stricken. It's really amazing how well done music can drive home a film.

Thanks kurtmo, glad you liked LEAP OF FAITH. As the filmmaker, I find MANY flaws with it, and really wish I could re-shoot the whole thing (but I guess that drive is what pushes us to be better, right?)

Anyway, yes, Leo's music really boosts the piece to a whole new level. And the great thing was he did it in just 4 days (although he prefers more time, but I had a budgeting issue that pushed the shoot to a week from the deadline) and he did it with ZERO direction/input from me. I sent him the locked edit and while I slaved away on the effects/CC/sfx/etc, he went to work on the score and actually delivered the exact style/feel of score I wanted without a single word of input from me.

I believe Matt had more time on his project and was able to work with Leo a little more, in order to refine the score to Matt's exact vision, so he can probably tell you what the experience was like. But my experience was extremely pleasant and satisfying, I would gladly work with Leo again ANYTIME.

Good luck on the film

Production Stills! I have a shot of bicycle-cam, but we missed a shot of my new vacuum mount car attachment. This gun is the only one in the film. It may look innocent, but don't be deceived. It can be deadly!

My hot car shot! (I do have a hot car shot, but this shot of my civic ain't it!).

First full cut complete...it's cool, but it's 9 minutes...w/o credits!!! Oh, no! I'm doomed!!! How 'bout 2 spy fest entries: "TCD1 - The early years" and "TCD2 - The Tragedy with Ties Continues!"

credits? No one needs no stinkin' credits. Just give out a shout out - holla, that should do it! lol, do a longer version for copy and everyone will be happy.

That's the plan, man. The short cut is actually much better than my longer first cut. The time limit forced me to evaluate which shots were essential and which were extraneous. Makes for tighter, cleaner final product!

Sorry about the weather interruption. Hope the weather clears up and you can get things filmed!

Most of our production was filmed outside. We really lucked out with the weather on our main film days!

I love time restrictions, they force you to be more creative and really think about what you are doing. Every shot, every beat needs to contribute to the story. I took a class where we did 4 one minute films and our final project could only be 3 minutes. Best film class I took. But, congrats on getting it under 6 minutes. 5 seconds should be enough to at least give actor and main crew props at the end.

That's an awesome license plate. Nice way to work in the name.

On a side note, how did I miss that you were in Minnesota? I lived there until I was 8, then spent summers there with my Dad through high school. Haven't been back for several years, but I miss it sometimes.

Thanks. The plate works well for my final shot.

I've been in MN pretty much for ever. We love it here, especially this time of year. We had to shoot things quickly, as our spring look changed every 15 minutes. Trees grew leaves over night.

When I told my friend he'd have a key role in this film I neglected to tell him that my son would be hitting him....er...below the belt:Drogar-Shock(DBG):. We filmed this scene on two seperate occasions to get some usable footage. Brad just coming back for more. Luckily Rob "missed" most of the time!

That's a great shot! Did you guys steal this location on the accordion bus or do you know the driver or ??? Pretty cool.

Cinealma - This was shot on our city light rail line. And yes we stole it.

Like I said, we had to re-shoot cause I rushed the first shoot and we didn't have time to practice. The other passengers seemed cool with everything. Luckily we didn't get people smiling or trying to get on film. Someone did ask to be in the credits.

Good news and bad news on production progress.

Good news:
Video is complete
Video edit is locked
Audio dubbing is complete (including cheesy foreign language overdub)
CC is complete

Bad news:
My (former) composer is out of the country and has internal organ problems

Slightly good news:
I've found some decent Royalty free music that I like and have taken an initial cut at a score.

Bad news:
Music isn't my speciality, so I got a lukewarm feel about the score fits.

Question:
Any of you music/composer types be willing to take a look/listen and make a comment or two about the score? If so, PM me and we can arrange something.

Thanks all.

It's been fun working on a project in this crowd!
