GH3 Thread for Quick GH3 Questions/Responses

Unless you plan on shooting with Nikon bodies that can take advantage of the AF and the stabilization, I don't see much advantage shooting with this lens over...

Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED Lens : $999

Thanks Dingo! And thanks for your first non-dismissive reply to one of my posts ;)
Just to confirm...neither the lens I post nor the one you've linked will take advantage of AF or IS?
Thanks. He wanted $1700 for his (used), so I agree this is the better deal.

I am doing the firmware updates for the 12-35 and 35-100. I own two GH3 bodies. Do I need to install the new lens firmware in each body? Or will one body update the lenses for both camera? I know nothing about lens firmware. Thanks!

@IansCreations Unless Panasonic is being unusual, the firmware is (by definition) included in the device. So you would only need to update the lens firmware once per lens for that version.

If the GH3 has a firmware update of it's own in relation to the lenses, then you would need to update that individually for each camera.

You select "Version disp." in the Setup menu to get information on which version you have got installed. Just update on one, move the lens and see what the other body will tell you.

I believe I read somewhere that you had to have "a lens" (any lens) mounted when you did a lens firmware update, which I interpreted as it didn't have to be *the* lens, hence I assumed the firmware update is really for the body (which I would think would be the cheapest, easiest solution for Panasonic). This might be totally wrong though. I only have one body, so it's not an issue for me regardless. What I'm saying is it's so easy to verify yourself, so why take someones word for it on a forum?

@larsarus Isn't the ambiguity of the English language maddening at times? :)

Think of it this way - the firmware for the camera has it's own set of updates. Sometimes it even mentions support for certain lenses, but then there are lens firmware updates as a separate category. If the lens firmware updates had to be updated for each camera, they would have just been rolled into the camera specific firmware updates.

The fact that they are a separate category (and can be used among different camera models while the camera specific firmware cannot) is a helpful clue that you are dealing with something different. If the firmware updates had to be re-done for each camera they would be written as "firmware update for [camera x] to add support for [lens y]" as opposed to as "firmware update for [lens y]".

It shouldn't be that complicated but from years of technical writing I can tell you that it easily ends up that way sometimes. :)

This is not correct. Electronic m4/3 lenses have their own chips inside the lens, and this is what the LENS firmware is updating. Camera bodies have their own chips and their own firmware.

Every piece of gear needs to be updated only once with their own new firmware. ( i.e. once for each lens, once for each camera body )

Yeah, that's a more succinct way of putting it. +1

When I'm viewing the histogram in a live scene and about to take a pic...sometimes I want to adjust the exposure. But to that I have to press the exposure comp button on top of the camera and rotate the real dial.

This takes me away from the histogram overlay and then I have to return to it after.

Fine BUT - can I do this "live"....like being able to see the histogram as i rotate the dial? Without doing two steps?

Thanks

Is it possible to use the AE LOCK button to hold iDynamic constant on the GH3 in either P, A, S, M, or Movie mode like it is on the GH2?
