GH3 Thread for Quick GH3 Questions/Responses

Well....I experimented with this and can't figure it out. When I press the cursor button, the white square pops up, but not the yellow focus square you get when you touch the screen or press the shutter halfway. Also, it doesn't refocus...the white square remains in one place (even after pushing the cursor multiple times? And eventually disappears again. Any ideas what I a, doing wrong? I have on Movie M, M priority, and AFS.

You must have a setting turned off. Make sure you have the following set: Custom Menu, Page 3, Direct Focus Area ---> ON

Yes. It works in all modes. Very handy feature.

are you sure ?
I just tried it in creative movie mode and i cant lock/unlock focus during recording .
Only one time (before starting shooting) …..
Can you try it ( several times focus/ refocus/lock )?
Its very important for me….

Now I understand. You'd like to lock focus while recording. The AF/AE button will not do this. However, half pressing and holding the shutter button will.

Good luck.

I haven't tested this feature thoroughly but in Creative Video Mode, does the AF/AE lock work only while holding the button or is it a single press? Any indicators on the OLED to note that AF/AE lock is active?

Custom settings dictate if lock is press and hold or single press. Indicators displayed at lower left and upper right of OLED.

Good luck.

it doesn't work in video…. only once, in the beginning .

I can't understand why Pany did this, its very useful to have this on video….

it does work for shutter button but the question was for AE/AF lock button… this doesn 't wotk in video mode while shooting.
Try it….

I am well aware AE/AF Lock cannot be engaged while recording. Once I understood this was your issue, I was simply trying to provide an alternative with Shutter AF which can be engaged and held while recording.

Anyone else have the right vertical guide line (if you have thirds guide line turned on) slightly move leftward when pressing record?

they put it there so consumers (as opposed to pro-sumers or professionals) would have a quick and foolproof way to shoot video, regardless of what mode they happen to be in.

Very eloquent reminder that the GH3 is a CONSUMER camera with envelope pushing by Pro-sumers. Thank you Panasonic :( :)

Anyway, here's a little, partially undocumented trick and .....I agree. They really should call the photo modes something like... "Photo Modes". And recording mode something like "Video Mode".

You did a great job articulating all that. It has irked me for decades that Consumer products design teams refuse to hire Human Factors persons (me) to assist in the SUI/GUI of their products. You'll notice that once you step up to Pro video cameras, the Interaction models suddenly make huge sense- that's because Pros don't put up with all the 'chicken dances' they make consumers do.

I'm seeing that exposure compensation does not work in creative movie mode, nor in M or S modes (where it would be the most useful), despite the fact that the manual says it should work in these modes. Is anyone else seeing this?

Exposure compensation in M mode would serve no purpose, since all changing the EV setting does is increase/decrease the shutter time, which you can do by... changing the exposure time.

There's a feature, in that shooting video in any other mode than "creative", including M, allows one to use auto ISO (I can't even see how to make the ISO manually set in M). I like the control this allows for in certain R&G situations, as I can keep shutter speed and aperture constant while still not have to think about exposure. However, it would be useful in these cases to under expose by 1/3 or 2/3 just to protect highlights, hence the desire for exposure compensation as the manual claims is possible.

I am using my iPad as a wifi link to the Panasonic GH3 and I was wondering if I will be able to use my macbook pro to do the same connection? There does not appear to be an application download that works on the macbook pro. Can anyone help wit this issue? Many thanks Paul
