GH4 Thoughts on Sigma 18-35mm Nikon w/ Speedbooster on GH4?

I'm contemplating a GH4 with a sigma 18-35mm or a Voigtlander 17mm. I'd really like the versatility of the range but not sure how the sigma would hold up when it comes to cropping. I'm looking at getting a GH4 strictly for architecture and cropping during interviews and speakers during events. This leads me to another question. About how much can you crop the image in 4k before you start to see image degradation?

Thanks!

I'm not an architecture photographer/videographer, but is the 17mm wide enough for that kind of work? When using the full sensor it would be a 35mm field of view eqv, when using 4k it would convert to something like 39mm...

Tokina 11-16 probably would be a better bet for architecture, but won't work so well for the rest such as interviews. Sigma 18-35 would be a great all around versatile lens, since it is a very nice lens both in build quality and optics. Get both and you'll be set :D

The GH4 + MB Speed Booster + Sigma 18-35 is currently my combo and it's awesome! The sharpest picture I have ever produced from any camera. For everything except architecture the 18-35 is great, but I would definitely invest in a much wider lens for architectural shots. I'm looking for a good wide angle for the Speed Booster and GH4 myself.

I've been thinking the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 for GH4 and BMPCC (with and without Speed Booster), however, I don't know what distortion on that lens is like...

Or, buy the Sigma 10-20mm F4-F5.6. According to LensTip, at "10mm we have a slight barrel distortion which value was determined as –0.88%. At 15 mm it swiftly turns into “pincushion” at the level of 1.3%; at 20 mm it decreases to 0.9%".

I have the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 in EF-mount, but its distortion is as bad as the Tokina (3%+ at 10mm).

Damn, these looks good. Distortion is so low!

Any idea on when they're due, and price?

When I spoke to Kowa at Cine Gear they didn't give a firm date for delivery but stated soon. Seems they may produce all black models as well as the two tone.

Build quality seemed good & they had some oversized architecture photos shot on the 8.5mm where the distortion seemed very well controlled.

Anyone know how the Panasonic 7-14mm f4 rectilinear performs? The Kowa looks great but not sure it would fit my timeframe (need a lens/camera combo by the middle of July).

The 7-14 lens is sharp and would by my first choice if I wanted a native wide angle lens. Good bit of money though.

I think the Panasonic 7-14mm has in camera distortion correction.

I just bought the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS for my Nikon D7100. I also am planning on getting the Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS. Those two lenses were the highest resolution/sharpest in term of MP in DxO tests.

I know that is longer than what you are asking about. But if you go wider to something like the Sigma 10-20, that would be a logical to extension of the kit on the mid and tele ends.

Those are both crop/DX lenses FWIW.

Good luck.
