Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

I'm betting that Pana will answer the HDV call with a handycam-sized HD camera around NAB. With the popularity of the DVX, it would be silly for Pana to not come out with something like a HDV version of the DVX. Any thoughts? What would you like to see Pana do with their HDV product? Will it even be HDV?

Check out the several threads to this effect in the forum at the top (Articles/News).

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

Panasonic anounced today new rebates along with magic bullet for editors. this can mean only one or two things. the fx1 is really hurting sales or they are going to anounce a new camera at NAB and they need to lower their inventory.

Well, you can speculate, or you can call retailers and ask. They're flooded in FX1's (the price has come down $500 since release). However, we just ordered another DVX100A a couple of weeks ago, and we had to wait because... they were SOLD OUT. EVS had to wait for a new shipment, and they said that the DVX's were "selling like hotcakes."

So I don't think there's an inventory problem, certainly. In fact, EVS just RAISED their price $100.

Looks like the DVX is doing just fine against the FX1 and XL2. The $300 rebate is US-only, and is a tool to fight gray-market importing. If Panasonic was backed-up on inventory, you'd expect the $300 rebate to be worldwide, but it's not, it's only for the US. And the new HD camera they're introducing is going to be priced to compete against the Z1.

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

A good way to determine what's HOT and what's NOT. What is always in stock for sale and what is always sold out. What the streets are flooded with and what is hard to find......

Is to check current rental prices. That's the end all be all way to tell who is in the lead, and what is most desired.

That camera is a phenomenon. Never seen anything like it. I think having a family environment llike DVXuser is doing a lot to make folks comfortable about the camera even today. :) As rentals manager, I am usually taking 3 cameras from one guy and giving them to another guy waiting in the elobby, before I can even charge the batteries....

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

There is no doubt that Panasonic produces excellent cameras in the prosumer and consumer range. The problem is that they come out with their products too late. Had they made their DVX100 available when Sony was selling their DVX2000, then there would be no Sony products for sale in the DV prosumer world. Sony is always among the first ones and Panasonic follows with better products 2-3 years later. By the time they sell an DHV or HD cam somewhere in the range if an FX1, people will have forgotten about HDV and moved on to something better.

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

Yeah, DVCpro!

I don't agree. Panasonic has never been late. They have, perhaps, taken a little time to perfect their cameras, but that is a good thing. Sony has a tendency to release half baked solutions and crappy formats that die faster than a man eating bad meatloaf (ok, that was pretty bad... it's early what can I say?).

not to mention their crappy audio as well... ;)

Shaw & Boo (lol, sounds funny together)

The Z1U, is fully cooked and the audio is awesome! IMO

But when Pany comes out with their HD solution...ohhhhHHHh boy, I bet it is gonna be a cold piece of work! I can't wait to see it at NAB.

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

Oh I wasn't looking down the the Z1U. Just overall they have produced a lot of formats that failed and/or cameras that weren't quite what everyone was hoping for. For what it does - interlaced HD - the Z1U is pretty darn nice!

In the case of HDV I think it was JVC who released a half baked solution.

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

As far as Z1 audio goes, I have no direct experience with the Z1, but oleg on this forum has tested it and declared that in DV/DVCAM mode it's quite competitive with the DVX, but in HD mode, it's noticeably not as good.

As far as Panasonic being "late", how does introducing the first prosumer 24P camera get classified as "late"? Or the first SD 24P pro camera (the SDX900)? Or the second SD 24P pro camera (the SPX800) which also features P2 recording? Or desktop firewire editing that actually works (DVCPRO-HD in FCP-HD and Avid Express HD)? Seems Panasonic's doing plenty of innovating all on their own.

And JVC had a high-def prosumer camcorder on the market for over a year and a half before Sony put theirs out -- how is that being "first"? If you want to talk about "late", check out Canon...

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

NOT GOOD FOR TEATRALICAL OR HEAVY EDITTING - GOOD FOR NEWS , LIGHT DOCO AND EVERYTHING THAT THE PRODUCER DONT WONT TO PAY EXTRA FOR DOUBLE SYSTEM:-)

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

What about the classics? 8mm, 16mm? .... Got to love the DVX though.

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

What about them? Both super8mm and 16mm are still widely used.

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

Well yes. If Panasonic releases the new camera in 2005, and even better before Summer, Sony will suffer for sure. They are already having problems because of lower camera sales than expected, which is no surprise seen all of their problems. Gone are the days that Sony stuff meant quality. The FX1 is a great camera but I don't think it's reliable in many aspects. Besides, interlaced! Pleeease! Don't they browse the internet at least once to get an idea of what people want? Mine is going on Ebay if Panasonic comes out.

Mainly due to the MPEG1 compression? Or is there some other reason?

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

mainly if you are going to run your dyalog from one place to other , so it alwais better to start as high as possible even you are in digital domain , for music i really dont see how can i mannege with mpeg as a start
but like i sad , if the producer whant me record on old tape deck - ill say yes sir and get the check
so in the end it come to the onesty of these who pay for the show to create better product for deaf audince:-)

Re: Thoughts on Panasonic's Answer to the FX1/Z1U

Come one guys, should we compare what can be.

The DVX100 is with no doubt the best you can get out of SD.(in this price range) followed very closely by XL2. But now we are talking HDV, and not SD.I don't think people are interested with the Sony for it's SD capabilities otherwise they should think again.

What really scares me in this forum, is the amount of headacke tablet that are needed for the one who wants to jump to HDV. People are just fighting to defend their prefered camera.

The problem is what panasonic is going to come with and WHEN???? and is worth waiting??? some are saying wait for the NAB, some are saying it's for 2006... And whenever it happen, it's sure that Panasonic will have more and better features, because they are just waiting for comment on Sony to rectify the problems that users are having...BUT AT WHAT PRICE.... BLAH BLAH BLAH

Under 10000$ I've seen...It's a bit vague...So yeah we can wait for PANASONIC... but anyway we can talk for ever, it won't change the fact that here people seems to give more importance to the pixel level than what people think of your final product, because I guess that we are trying to produce video or film of some sort here. So all of you, ask yourselves if the person that watch your movie will really see all this little details you are fighting for? Ask someone with an untrained eye to wacth what you have done and comment on it.

Look I'm not going to mention any movie title, but I recall wacthing a movie filed on an XL1 with some friends that don't know anything about camera and they all very impressed. Oh, not with the image( because it wasn't good at all), but with the movie. on the other hand we also watch another movie in 35mm beautifull picture and special effect, and one us manage to fall asleep after 20 minutes. the movie was crap...

So just take it easy, if you want to do nice TV program maybe stick with DVX100, if you want to print on 35 mm then have a go at the sony and when pana releases then see if it's worth it to change your camera, but the most important really make sure that your final product make sense and please people. A camera is only a tool, not a final product.

After what I've seen and heard, I'm now gonna give a go to the FX1E....
