This might be a really Stupid Question, but...

Why can we not record the More Robust Codecs, like DVCPROHD and AVC-Intra to SDHC and SDXC Cards? Can someone please explain this, I know there must be a simple reason why.

To my understanding., a single sd-card is unable to write data fast enough for dvcprohd. In a P2-card there is 4 sd-cards in a raid configuration, making it possible to write data faster. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I know class10 SD cards and maybe even some class6 cards are fast enough for DVCPROHD 720 24pn, because that's only 40Mbps. AVCIntra50 is 50mbps. The real reason is they save the higher end codecs for more reliable media like P2.

Well they don't want to sell the farm before they milk the cows! It would be interesting to look at true hardware costs. The only reason I can think they charge more for those cameras is they make fewer of them, so have to amortize over the fewer sold. That's about it. With the power of computers and such there can't be any real argument for not enough horsepower in the compact space, nor for media speed given compact flash can handle 100+ mbps codecs any day of the week. So the only explanation is they don't want to undercut all their higher end options.

Oh and cost for better ccd's and cmos'. Though perhaps someone knows why global shutter cmos chips aren't available under $10K yet? Are they that much harder to make?

So apparently there is no defined answer, does anyone else know? I expect with the new speed, we should be able to compress and write to the cards at that speed, what will it take, class 15 before we can, or is it the fact that they are not trying to undercut the higher end options?

Well, eventually they will get there. However, if the AF100 had targeted AVCIntra100 as it's format, there would have been no SD cards that
would have been able to be used when it debuted.

It would probably cost as much, or more to just buy a Ki Pro Mini or NanoFlash than get a camera like the AF100 with one of those codecs.

Problem is probably as much technical as business- i.e. you don't want to cannibalize the higher end gear by giving away the farm. Why is a Rolls Royce nicer than a Hyundai, etc...

Exactly...in reality it seems to be more of a business decision than a technical limitation. Perhaps sd cards were too slow, but compact flash certainly wasnt.

Of course it is.

This camera was built to a price point and they build different cameras to other price points.

What else do you expect? Thats how your business works and that's how their business works. Seems reasonable enough to me!
