This is weird - Sigma 28-70mm & 550D/T2i question

Recently bought a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 for my 550D, but it's got a few issues.

Firstly, in Manual Picture mode I can adjust the aperture ok and the results are visible but I can clearly see the iris isn't moving, if I put it in movie mode and try to adjust the aperture nothing at all happens, no iris movement or change in brightness.

I can record in movie mode fine, if I take a still picture that image is recorded onto the card but I get the 'ERR 01' message about dirty contacts and have to reboot the camera.

I have cleaned the contacts, but no dice. Thinking the chip in the lens is incompatible with my body?

Unsure, I know there's some issue with Sigmas not reading properly on the EOS bodies, anyone run into this before?

All I can think to do is try it on an older body like a 40D or something.

I don't have that particular Sigma lens, but I own two, both a zoom and a prime, and have zero issues. You could just have a lens with a faulty component.

it is generally a problem with the older lenses. Sigma reverse-engineers the aperture and focus mechanisms, so there is room for error as the Canon algorithms change slightly over the years.

it sounds alot like the lens is too old to work properly on your body.

this is straight from The Digital Picture website:
The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Pentax, Minolta, Nikon and Sigma mounts. Disclaimer: There are some potential issues with third party lenses. Since Sigma reverse engineers (vs. licenses) manufacturer AF routines, there is always the possibility that a new body might not support an older third party lens. There are examples of this happening in the past. Sometimes a lens can be rechipped to be made compatible, sometimes not. Second, there is the risk of a problem that results in the lens and body manufacturers pointing blame at each other. However, Sigma USA's 4-year warranty is far superior to Canon's standard 1 year warranty.

Review update Nov 17, 2010: I just received an email from "Dan" with the following bad news: "I have this lens and it does not work with a canon XSi (back focuses). Sigma informs me that this is a ROM issue and cannot be fixed."

It's an old lens, back before upgradeable firmware was available so if Sigma still has parts for it, you can get it upgraded/updated but mostly you'd be out of luck. You can probably use it with an older DSLR body like an original 1D or 1Ds or 10D. Anything later will not likely work, even the EOS Elan 7/7E film bodies would be too recent.

I've Sigma lenses that need firmware updates or re-chipped, but I was lucky the lenses were still in production or parts were still available.
