This is Just Embarrassing- What am I missing?

Unboxed the new HMC150, charged battery, inserted SDHC card, took off front lens cover and nothing... The LCD and viewfinder are completely black (even when pointed at ceiling fan light). It is picking all the audio up but no visual... Iris is open...
Good grief, how embarrassing, what am I missing here?

yep... i mean i have everything on the display... all the text that is... just no image... when i clap the audio meters jump

Does anything happen if you white/black balance, or if you switch up the scene files? What if you change resolutions?

Just on my way to work so no time to check my cam but I wondered if the STD note in the viewfinder has anything to do with it?

-Do you see anything when you press the menu button?
-Have you tried auto-iris
-Remove the SD card and turn it on without the SD card
-What's the shutter speed set to?
-If you are able to see the menu, try changing recording modes.

Anything?

In any case you should see at least some light passing by on the display but that one seems to be pitch black, like the sensors on it are dead or something, take it back where you got it from before something more happens to it...

Okay, what you're describing in that video is pretty much impossible, so don't be embarrassed -- either the camera's broken, or (outside chance) maybe the shutter speed is on like 1/2000th or something. Press the "shutter" button on and off, and see if it helps.

(oh, and for the prior poster who asked, "STD" means "standard auto-iris mode"; the other options would be for "BLC" for backlight compensation autoiris, or "SPT"? I think, for spotlight compensation. So that's not a problem).

The auto focus numbers don't change when the camera points somewhere else. A good sign there's nothing coming from the sensors, as opposed to a loss of video to the LCD.

Grasping for straws here but try turning the cam off, remove the battery for a few minutes, reinsert the battery and turn the camera back on. Any change?

just got home from work... about to eat dinner with the wife and then i will give some of these things a try

okay guys... shutter was on 1/48th so ruling that out... turned cam off and waited a few and turned back on- nothin'
removed sd card and still had no visuals... when i press the menu button i do get all the menu options but i already tried scene files as well as different recording modes (tried 60i and 24p)...
frustrated beyond reason... guess i will call BH tomorrow and request a return...

That's a bummer man! I seriously hope you get a new camera ASAP and get to have fun shooting with it rather than going mad trying to figure out what's wrong. Good luck and let us know how it all goes.

its so close to march that if BH will just give me a credit I might wait and see what is released first quarter... or they might just make me do an exchange which is fine... i just want a stinkin' camera

When you turned the cam off did you also try removing the battery for a few minutes? I only mention this because your camera is a computer. I've had other computers (e.g., droid phone) that needed this kind of cold reboot to resume working properly. Obviously, it is an extremely long shot but worth trying before you send it back.

If it's easy to send back, I'd just do it right away. I'd never be comfortable with something failing on me right off the bat.

Two things come to mind.

1) dead ccd's (or somewhere in that chain of electronics)

2) Iris is stuck closed. Either of which are a fault.

One thing to try is a system reset. (it's in the menu somewhere as some sort of "reset", can't remember the exact menu name).
