It took me almost two months of trolling forums to stumble across a great way to get a CANON 7D for just under $1100.

RIGHT NOW BRAND NEW CANON 7D BODIES @ Amazon.com ARE $1699.00
This is a simple step-by-step way to save almost $600 on your Canon 7D
(also save $$$$$ on 5D MrkII, 60D or 50D)

PREPARATIONS:
" THE CANON LOYALTY PROGRAM"
This is a fairly unknown program that, I guess, some HDSLR uses had stumbled across a few years ago.
(I found the info on a thread so old, that the number listed was no longer in service!!)

Canon offers this program to previous Canon camera owners as a substitute for camera repair. If you call Canon about a repair, and they feel it is "junked", they offer a replacement model @ 20% any refurbished model, shipped from Canon directly.

So... THE CANON LOYALTY PROGRAM offers 20% OFF any Refurbished Canon Camera.
Cool, huh?

So This is what you will need to do to be prepared.

1. Get an old Canon Camera.
Any old Canon Camera will do. I went to a Goodwill and bought a 15 year old rangefinder for $5. DON'T SPEND REAL MONEY ON IT!!!! You can also buy some broken/parts Canon cameras on Ebay for $10-$15. Dig through your closets, garages, rummage sales...ect.

2. Throw it down the stairs.
Break it really good like. It must be "unrepairable".

3. Have your credit card/debit card ready.
You must pay for your new Canon while you are on the phone.

4. Grab a piece of paper and a pen.
.....duh.

MAKE THE CALL:
5. Call Canon Direct: 1800-OK-CANON

6. Have a Chat.
First, Canon is not stupid. Don't pretend like you DON'T want a great deal on a camera.
They know you want a great deal. I read in some other threads that people were inventing these grand yarns about their sick mothers....blah blah blah.
Don't bother.
Tell them your Model ______ Canon camera took a header down three flights of stairs and broke into a million pieces (see Step #3).
Tell them that you heard that Canon offers a discount to loyal Canon owners on Refurbished Canon Cameras and you'd like to upgrade.

7. The Run Around.
You can never tell what kind of operator you are going to get. You might end up with Operator #202934749.
She is pissed because the dummy@ Subway put black olives on her $5 Footlong, even though she specifically asked him not to. And now...she is going to pass that pissed-offed-ness onto you.
When I called I was passed around to three different operators.
Op#1 - The First operator transferred me to "Repairs" after I explained everything to her.
Op#2 - The Second operator listened to my spiel, asked a few questions about Model of my camera, then transferred me to Op#3.
Op#3 - The Third operator told me she was authorized by Op#2 to offer me the Canon Loyalty Discount of 20% off all of the refurbished cameras in stock *.

8. Pick a Winner
These are the current discounted prices on available BODY ONLY models (3/24/11):
1D MrkIV.................$3199.36
5D MrkII..................$1599.20***
7d.........................$1087.20
T1i........................$415.99
T2i........................$447.99
60D.......................$639.99**
50D.......................$562.68

Don't forget the TAX!!
I live in California, we have almost 10% sales tax...it may be more or less. They may charge everyone tax, or they may only charge tax to persons residing in a state which charges sales tax. Someone in New Hampshire can test this theory.

* There were reports from the threads I read that sometimes they are OUT OF STOCK on some models. Not surprisingly ...the 7D and 5D MrkII. It was reported that a second attempt, later in the week, by some people was successful. When I called, they had 7D's in stock.
** A DVX User recently contacted Canon and was told that the 60D did not qualify for the Canon Loyalty Program. (3/25/11)
*** A DVX User recently contacted Canon and was told that the 5D MrkII no longer qualified for the Canon Loyalty Program (3/30/11)

WRAP IT UP:
9. The ol' In Out, In Out
Once you've paid for your new camera...you still have some work to do!
You'll need to send them your broken camera!
Canon will send you an email with a pre paid postage label.
DONT DELAY SENDING THIS OUT!!!!
I sent my package out the same day. I read on a few of the other forums that some people were charged the 20% because they waited too long to send in the broken camera. I didn't read a definitive time table, but most people agreed that as long as the package went into the mail within a week, you'll be fine.

10. Track it.
Canon sends your camera FREE 2-Day air via UPS.
Follow the tracking number!

11. Enjoy!

SOME NOTES:
1. Refurbished cameras are a risk.
Just like walking across the street is a risk. Sure, sometimes people get hit, but the majority of us cross safely. I felt comfortable with Canon's 90 Day Guarantee on Refurbished Cameras. It was an informed decision and a well calculated risk. Look around, get feedback from refurbished camera owners. Buy smart.

2. She's got the Look.
My 7D arrived in wonderful condition cosmetically. It looked exactly like it would as a brand new camera. Flipping through the menus and utilizing the buttons, everything feels right and is working fine. I'll be updating this thread if I come across something!

......Good Luck All!

P.S - Just in case anyone had any questions of legitimacy:

Something tells me you'll go far in this business...

+1 lol

Best Buy comes in a close second with their rewards zone program. I used a 12% coupon for the kit 7D. On top of that, I used "play money" that they had sent me as part of the program and saved another $120.00.

I know another great way to get a Canon camera for free.

1) Drive fast on the freeway
2) Change lanes in front of an expensive looking car and slam on your brakes
3) After the accident, pull a neck brace out of your passenger seat, and start talking about lawsuits
4) Collect a check from their insurance company
5) Now you can buy all the Canon cameras you want!

(Just in case anyone wasn't sure, yes, this was sarcasm)

Interesting, I actually have an old Canon point and shoot that I was considering trading in for a second DSLR.
No scam or anything here, I've actually used Canon to upgrade my older p&s cameras in the past, the program is a legit one. I didn't realize how cheap the t2i and 60D would be, though! (I'm much more interested in the t2i for magic lantern and the 60D for the display)

Does it need to be a DSLR to upgrade to another DSLR though? Or can it be any Canon product (elf, powershot, etc)?

I traded in a $5 pont and shoot! So I feel certain that any Canon camera will do!

thanks for abusing the process, probably means they will alter this policy in the future.

A little correction:
They don't sell a 60D through this program. I ordered the 7D yesterday for $1087, this it true. But before that I asked specifically about the 60D and the rep told me that the 60D is not the part of the program yet because this model is too new. I don't think she lied to me, and I haven't heard of anyone who bought a 60D through the Loyalty program. 7D and 50D -yes, a lot, but no 60D. And the whole transaction wasn't that difficult at all. It took about 10min. and very smooth.
And, btw, this program is not such a big secret. You don't have to dig through archived threads to find it. It is all over the first pages of forums like dpreview and POTN. That's, probably, why old broken $5-$10 Powershots are flying off the ebay like hot knishes. Otherwise, who would've needed them even for $ .99 .

I'm fairly certain that IF they ever change this policy it will have VERY little to do with this thread.
I want to thank you for your wonderfully constructive and well thought out contribution to this thread. Kudos.

I actually have a very old Canon Powershot A75 that has a really messed up sensor... This would work perfectly and since it was my first and still only digital camera... :p

I called them today and I can confirm the prices for ALL the camera's EXECPT the 5Dmk2.. The lady on the phone (who was nice) told me that camera wasn't part of the program for this year, it was last year but not this year... So I'm guessing she is mistaking if the price was $1599.99 as of the 24th of this month. I plan on calling back in the next day or so to try again.

Can anyone else confirm or misspell what she said?
