C100: This Could Be A Big Deal : C100 Dual Pixel AutoFocus Upgrade from Canon...

Any idea if this would be slower in 24P? On previous camera with an autofocus circuit, it was always faster at 60i than 24p or 30P.

Also, did anyone else notice that the 50mm lens was at F8 throughout the tests? What if this was performed at f2.8 or f1.2???

Hah, f8 certainly helps. I can tell you from using the 70D that the Canon AF tech is pretty damn good. I have used the AF tracking feature with my 70D and Sigma 18-35 1.8 quite a bit in the past two months with great results.

I actually shot a national TV spot using only the AF tracking feature. I didn't manual focus once and it preformed well. For most of the spot, I was operating between f.3.2 - f5.6. There were some dolly shots where both the camera and the subject were in motion and I had no issues with focus.

Soon enough, we'll see plenty of tests. $500 seems a bit steep to implement this upgrade, considering the 70D is a $1200 camera that offers AF, plus tracking which the C100 will not. However, to use the AF tracking feature effectively, you really need a touchscreen LCD display so you can select the object in the frame without having to reframe it in the center each time. If they were giving us a touchscreen LCD + AF tracking for $500, I'd go nuts over this. I would expect the next version of this camera to have both.

I too have the 70D and I can say that it AF's very well. I shot a project where I didn't focus the camera once manually and it hit focus about 98% perfect. I'll do the upgrade to the C100 but I don't expect the same performance as the 70D due to tracking ability and touch focus.

So with the C100 you anticipate the only thing it will focus on is what is inside the center square? That will be limiting to say the least, but it still would be cool to have. Still, $500 for that feature alone is a bit steep. I could maybe see $249???

This is a fantastic feature. I shoot in too many unpredictable situations with long tele lenses. This AF would be very helpful if included in the C300. I had never dreamt that I would be requesting an AF feature in a film camera. Nevertheless, have sent a request to my local canon contact and was told that it would be duly forwarded to the Canon Gods in Japan.

Centre focus only and not being able to use non canon lenses with this upgrade may break the deal for me.

who cares. feb you upgrade, and apr @ NAB they announce C100 mark ii. then your $500 is floating in river

ahahahahaha

Anyone throwing away their C100/C300 after NAB please let me know. I will make you float in beer and collect your cameras. :)

Where did you hear that? I've read people with 70D's using non canon lenses with AF and they say it works fine. Is that just a C100 issue?

They are much more likely to show a new C300 before they show a new C100.....the C100 is only about 1 year old at this point.

I know, just pure irony

what Im saying is that its just a tool. a lot of people on this forum are over complimenting that. In 5 - 10 years we all gonna call it a piece of crap.

It was a page or two back. But I'm keen as for it to be wrong as I use Sigma lenses Mainly.
