C100: This Could Be A Big Deal : C100 Dual Pixel AutoFocus Upgrade from Canon...

NEVER and I mean and hope that Canon NEVER makes changes to the body design. It probably the best thing about the C cams. I would expect that if there is a C305 it would be a new processor that gives 1080/120 fps and then a new sensor that goes 14 stops with the possibility of shooting raw up to 60fps.
As for the c100. It is what it is and does what it does very well. If you need a better codec, record to the ninja. If you need a better evf, use an external one. If you need slow mo, use 60i. There are plenty of examples where it looks just fine. Or buy an Fs700 if you need slow mo.

What would be added in an updated C300? New sensor with better low light? Higher frames rates? Minor add-on features like the XH-A1s got when upgraded from the XH-A1? Can't be 4K RAW because that's the C500.

- not new sensor but new DIGIC DV procesor with better A/D conversion (14bit) and better output (10bit).
- a higher framerate is possible with this sensor, so 50p/60p is the second possible upgrade.
- XH-A1s has better audio part and some minor upgrades, audio part on C100 is OK.

I think that C105 would be 8bit/AVCHD/50p-60p/better AF
C305 could be 10bit (external recorder over HD-SDI)/XF codec internal record or DNxHD and ProRes record/50p-60p
C500 10bit video or 12bit raw/50p-60p

the only form factor thing i would change is the lcd, on the c100 it just doesn't make sense that they at least didn't put the hing on the side so we can face it forward, and god forbid, to the left. the length of the screen is actually right about the depth of the body, so they could mount it somewhat traditionally, giving us that much better farther forward positioning. i've never used a c300, but every time i see it, it just looks awkwardly top heavy the way the screen is positioned. but at least it's adjustable

This, and adding the audio inputs/module to the body instead of making it part of the handle, this would allow for more rigging options with third party handles, cages, etc.

"I've mentioned many times in the past that Canon USA follows this forum closely. This morning one of my contacts high up the chain at CUSA sent me an email regarding this particular discussion. Here's the official low-down:

1. There is no need to change the image sensor in the EOS C100 digital video camera in order to perform this feature upgrade.

2. This is an optional upgrade, and as such it will not be installed at the factory for future shipments of the C100.

3. Within the Cinema EOS line, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF feature upgrade is being offered exclusively for the EOS C100 camera.

4. Currently, we have no information to share about Canon's plans for other existing or future products. "

I couldn't agree more. It's almost perfect! Sure it could have the xlr inputs on the body, but then it wouldn't be compact as it is.

Confirmed by Yoshinari Onda, the global product manager for Canon’s Cinema EOS cameras that the sensor will not be swapped out only firmware and tweaking will be performed. The sensor already has the Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology only needs to activated and setup.

At 10:21 Yoshinari explains. Nice job by Dan Chung at the Inter BEE 2013 conference getting the interview. Also a cool live camera demo.

Then that means the C300 and C500 have the tech too (and they choose not to offer an upgrade), or they lied about the C100 having the same sensor. Interesting. In any case while I do like one shot AF to set up a focus on a static shot, I prefer to run my own focus.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an announcement for a C300 refresh at NAB, but it won't be released for at minimum 6 months after. Taking bets as to whether it will be a C300s, C305, or a C300 Mark II. If it's a 'C300s' refresh, it could be released sooner.

I'm personally waiting for the 4K version of the C300 myself. You know that'll come eventually. I can work within the current 8 bit limitation just fine for now. Grain is my friend. lol

I got the chance to play with a auto focus enhanced C100 at the CCW Expo in New York last Wednesday. The test video above is similar with what I experienced as long as the subject of interest is kept in the center rectangle. A Canon rep at the Expo told me the auto focus will only work with Canon EF lenses. He also told me the upgrade includes a sensor replacement. Looks like he was wrong about the sensor replacement. Since I shoot a lot of automotive events, including racing, I'm looking forward to the upgrade.

Any idea if this would be slower in 24P? On previous camera with an autofocus circuit, it was always faster at 60i than 24p or 30P.

Also, did anyone else notice that the 50mm lens was at F8 throughout the tests? What if this was performed at f2.8 or f1.2???

So why did it work in one test and not the other? Is it a question of low light?

I think that it was Mr. Yoshinari Onda "malfunction", don't look like a camera operator .-) . The second question is EF vs EF-S lens, but this would be a fun story if new EF-S (STM) is not supported. So I prefer the first option.
