C100: This Could Be A Big Deal : C100 Dual Pixel AutoFocus Upgrade from Canon...

The fact that Canon is offering an upgrade of any kind is huge IMO.

How good is the dual pixel autofocus? Does it work with any lens (obviously not manual lenses)? Or just the STM lenses?

This will enable continuous autofocus during recording with all Canon EF lenses, and double one-shot AF speed with 104 fully-supported lenses.

It sounds like it will work with any Canon EF lens.

Does it come with a wireless chip to connect to my brain so it knows what I want to focus on, or it is focused on the center of the screen?

It's a new sensor and firmware update. Has Canon ever offered a hardware upgrade like this before? I think this is very cool just for the fact that they are thinking about doing any hardware upgrades. I'm curious what other hardware can be "upgraded".

its like the first time ever canon is doing upgrades

I bought this camera for 6500, this 500 extra is like 7000 total of investment to me.

and you can get a new one for just 5.5k.

anyways, but here is something we can predict

1. no more new C100 mark ii in at least 3 years

2. There aren't that many C series buyers than 5Ds. a new mark ii will probably be sold to us who already own Mark i. and its not a good time now since most of us didnt make the investment back yet.

3. Canon knows the disadvantage of C100 compare to its competitors, and its being taken care of , although in a slow progress. But still a good news

For $500 one would wish for eliminating PFS and replacing with true progressive :) with 50P even!

Anyway, here are some things we can predict:

I'm not so sure of that. The C100 is a great camera and I bought one knowing, or at least expecting that there will be a newer version out eventually. That's fine. In the meantime I can use a great camera and hopefully make a little money off it before it's time to upgrade. I'd expect that Canon will at least announce a new C series camera by NAB.
This upgrade is being done simply because they can. Canon is wisely treating the C series as professional camera systems and supporting their customers. I'm happy they're doing it, I hope they do more of it, and I hope they do come out with an improved C100 (though hopefully the day after I sell mine!).

I know your speculating (like all of us like to do) but as long as you are......where do you think a new one would sit? I doubt they would just update the C100 within 15 months.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an announcement for a C300 refresh at NAB, but it won't be released for at minimum 6 months after. Taking bets as to whether it will be a C300s, C305, or a C300 Mark II. If it's a 'C300s' refresh, it could be released sooner.

What would be added in an updated C300? New sensor with better low light? Higher frames rates? Minor add-on features like the XH-A1s got when upgraded from the XH-A1? Can't be 4K RAW because that's the C500.

A nice 'refresh' to the C Series would be a better designed camera body - something in between a EX1 and the C Series. Obviously the current design was to entice DSLR operators and seemed to have worked.

No need for a new sensor as its already above and beyond amazing!!

Not sure how they could make a better camera body. I personally love the form factor of the C100.
